{"id":342380,"date":"2025-07-08T17:01:33","date_gmt":"2025-07-08T11:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=342380"},"modified":"2025-07-08T22:16:54","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T16:46:54","slug":"international-treaty-on-plant-genetic-resources-for-food-and-agriculture-plant-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-treaty-on-plant-genetic-resources-for-food-and-agriculture-plant-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Plant Treaty)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Farmers, policymakers warn Centre against proposed amendments to the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (the \u2018Plant Treaty\u2019).<\/p>\n<h2>About International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_342430\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-342430\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-342430\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-FAO.png?resize=481%2C266&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-FAO.png?resize=300%2C166&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-FAO.png?w=477&amp;ssl=1 477w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-342430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; FAO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>international agreement<\/strong> between member countries to <strong>conserve, use and manage plant genetic resources for food and agriculture<\/strong> around the world for the benefit of people everywhere.<\/li>\n<li>It is also known as the <strong>Plant Treaty<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>adopted<\/strong> by the the <strong>Food and Agriculture Organization<\/strong> <strong>(FAO)<\/strong> of the United Nations on 3 November <strong>2001<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The Treaty <strong>entered into force on 29 June 2004<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>legally binding instrument<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> The Treaty aims at-\n<ul>\n<li>recognizing the enormous <strong>contribution of farmers to the diversity of crops<\/strong> that feed the world;<\/li>\n<li>establishing a global system to <strong>provide farmers, plant breeders and scientists with access to plant genetic materials;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>ensuring that recipients <strong>share benefits<\/strong> they derive from the use of these genetic materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Treaty ensures that <strong>farmers and plant breeders<\/strong> access, easily, the raw genetic material needed to develop new crop varieties, including those with higher yields and those that are resilient to climate change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mechanisms:<\/strong> It provides a <strong>global solution to the challenges of crop diversity loss and climate change adaptation <\/strong>through mechanisms such as the <strong>Multilateral System and Benefit-sharing Fund.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>Multilateral System on Access and Benefit-sharing <\/strong>covers <strong>64 of the world\u2019s major crops,<\/strong> accounting for about <strong>80% of our food derived from plants<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>genetic resources of our most important food crops<\/strong>\u00a0are <strong>managed and exchanged<\/strong> by member countries and other stakeholders <strong>according to the provisions<\/strong> of the International Treaty.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contracting Parties:<\/strong> As of 1 April 2025, the International Treaty has <strong>154 Contracting Parties (members), including the European Union (EU).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Farmers, policymakers warn Centre against proposed amendments to the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (the \u2018Plant Treaty\u2019).
