misses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) recently held its meeting to discuss the the progress made on the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), officially known as \u201c<\/span><b>Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, is a set of 17 &#8220;<\/span><b>Global Goals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; with 169 targets among them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments have created new institutions, or have used existing institutions, to facilitate execution of the SDGs. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>India and Sustainable Development Goals:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institution for Transforming India <\/span><b>\u2013 NITI Aayog is the national body primarily responsible for implementing the SDGs in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The task at hand for NITI Aayog primarily is:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>to periodically collect data on SDGs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>to act productively on the goals and targets not only quantitatively but also maintaining high standards of quality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Steps taken:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has already undertaken a parallel exercise of interaction with the ministries to evolve indicators reflecting the SDG goals and targets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To achieve these tasks, the draft mapping of the goals and targets as an initial step on proposed Nodal and other Ministries has been carried out in consultation with MoSPI.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, as an illustration, the Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSSs),including the \u2018core of the core\u2019, \u2018core\u2019 and \u2018optional\u2019 Schemes being implemented by the States have been mapped along with some of the recent initiatives undertaken by the Central Government.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Ministries are implementing Central Sector Schemes and States are also implementing various State Schemes aligned with one or more SDGs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How can India achieve the Sustainable Development Goals?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country <\/span><b>needs to clearly identify priorities, have locally relevant and people-centric development policies, and build strong partnerships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>government also needs to have a focused plan for tracking and evaluating impact and scaling up successful interventions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>multidimensional poverty index ought to be adopted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to analyse domestic poverty conditions as suggested by some nations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>clear road map needed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address pressing challenges of refugee crisis, terrorism, fundamentalism, increasing hunger, inequality and climate change.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>HLPF process needs to be strengthened <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by formalising multi-stakeholder consultations, discussing critical challenges, and making the ministerial declaration mandatory for nations to fulfil.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The establishment of the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) was in 2012.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It replaced the Commission on Sustainable Development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development aims to:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide political leadership and recommendations for sustainable development,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follow-up and review progress in implementing sustainable development commitments,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhance the integration of economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have a focused, dynamic and action-oriented agenda,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consider new and emerging sustainable development challenges,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 2016 take on the functions of the ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Reviews on the
