{"id":34288,"date":"2018-10-30T16:46:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T11:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34288"},"modified":"2018-10-30T16:46:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T11:16:32","slug":"the-new-great-game-as-it-unfolds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-new-great-game-as-it-unfolds\/","title":{"rendered":"The new great game as it unfolds:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/the-new-great-game-as-it-unfolds\/article19946461.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new great game as it unfolds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Southern Asia will soon witness the unfolding of several new geopolitical operations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>United States Foreign Policy in South Asia: New geopolitical operations of India-Afghanistan-Pakistan and China<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u00a0U.S emphasized on a <\/span><b>conditions-based approach, expectations for strong Pakistani actions against Taliban and Haqqani network safe-havens, and a request for India to increase non-military assistance to Afghanistan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US president also <\/span><b>called on Afghans themselves to do more on tackling corruption, improving governance, and conducting their own nation-building<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Without a strong and sustained commitment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Afghans themselves, no US or international strategy can succeed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India <\/span><b>has emphasized that it will not send troops to Afghanistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, <\/span><b>India\u2019s capacity for increasing economic support to Afghanistan remains limited.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most importantly, <\/span><b>Islamabad and Rawalpindi are especially suspicious of India\u2019s role in Afghanistan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as endorsed by the new US strategy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistani reactions to reports of <\/span><b>recent drone strikes along the<\/b> <b>Afghan\u2013Pakistan border suggest that the drone issue could again impinge on US\u2013Pakistan relations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that the two countries are not geographically contiguous and <\/span><b>India cannot, for political and security reasons, transit trade through Pakistan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Afghanistan would remain at most secondary in China\u2019s broader foreign and security policymaking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, just as implementation of the China\u2013Pakistan Economic Corridor and management of relations with India would continue to draw significantly from China\u2019s political-diplomatic resources allocated as a whole to South Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>What is the way ahead?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India should stick to its decision of not sending its troops to Afghanistan while at the same time enhancing its training of Afghan security forces and reconstruction efforts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a need to pay attention on the complicated American geopolitical signaling in the Southern Asian region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The center needs to carefully design the key areas of its China policy for aligning Indo-China policy to suit U.S. interests would not help our long-term interests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both geo-economically and geopolitically, the Indo-Pacific region is abundant with potential and possibilities for New Delhi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one crucial area where New Delhi and Washington, along with other regional stakeholders such as Tokyo and Canberra, could synergize political, diplomatic and military efforts to uphold rule-based rights of navigation and over flight in the area and promote free trade in the broader region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new great game as it unfolds:\u00a0 Context: The Southern Asia will soon witness the unfolding of several new geopolitical operations.
