{"id":343250,"date":"2025-07-22T17:59:59","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T12:29:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=343250"},"modified":"2025-07-22T17:59:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T12:29:59","slug":"winter-fog-experiment-wifex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/winter-fog-experiment-wifex\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX) has completed ten successful years of dedicated research into North India\u2019s dense winter fog and its impact on daily life and aviation safety.<\/p>\n<h2>About Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_343251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-343251\" style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-343251\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-IITM.jpg?resize=491%2C257&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-IITM.jpg?resize=300%2C157&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-IITM.jpg?w=467&amp;ssl=1 467w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-343251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; IITM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the world\u2019s few <strong>long-term open-field experiments focused solely on fog <\/strong>as an elusive <strong>winter hazard<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective:<\/strong> The main scientific objective of this project is to <strong>study the characteristics and variability of fog events and associated dynamics<\/strong>, <strong>thermodynamics and fog microphysics<\/strong>, with the aim to achieve a <strong>better understanding of fog life cycle<\/strong> and ultimately improve capability in <strong>fog prediction<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Launch:<\/strong> The Experiment was launched in the winter of <strong>2015 at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), New Delhi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Executed by: <\/strong>It is led by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (<strong>IITM<\/strong>) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), with support from the India Meteorological Department (<strong>IMD<\/strong>) and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (<strong>NCMRWF<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Airports covered:<\/strong> <strong>IGIA<\/strong>, New Delhi along with <strong>Jewar Airport<\/strong>, Noida, and <strong>Hisar<\/strong>, Haryana<\/li>\n<li><strong>Techniques involved:<\/strong> Under the experiment, the scientists have deployed advanced instruments, <strong>micrometeorology towers, ceilometers, and high-frequency sensors<\/strong> to collect detailed data on temperature layers, humidity, wind, turbulence, soil heat, and aerosols.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong> The experiment has resulted into development of a <strong>high-resolution (3 km) probabilistic fog prediction model<\/strong> for operational <strong>forecasting<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>This model can <strong>reliably predict<\/strong> when fog will begin, how dense it will be, how long it will last, and when it will clear \u2014 achieving more than 85% accuracy for very dense fog (visibility below 200 meters).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance:<\/strong> For airlines, pilots, air traffic controllers, and passengers, this means fewer costly diversions, fewer delays, safer runways, and more informed travel during the challenging winter fog season.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Next phase:<\/strong> <strong>WiFEX-II<\/strong>\u2014 which will <strong>extend localized, runway-specific fog predictions<\/strong> to more airports in North India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Winter Fog Experiment (WiFEX) has completed ten successful years of dedicated research into North India\u2019s dense winter fog and its impact on daily life and aviation safety.
