{"id":343319,"date":"2025-07-23T18:15:46","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T12:45:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=343319"},"modified":"2025-07-23T18:22:50","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T12:52:50","slug":"international-seabed-authority-isa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-seabed-authority-isa\/","title":{"rendered":"International Seabed Authority (ISA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is still far from finalising rules for extracting coveted metals on the high seas even after two weeks of negotiations.<\/p>\n<h2>About International Seabed Authority (ISA)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_343321\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-343321\" style=\"width: 399px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-343321\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-ISA.jpg?resize=399%2C262&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-ISA.jpg?resize=300%2C197&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-ISA.jpg?w=410&amp;ssl=1 410w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-343321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; ISA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>autonomous international organization<\/strong> established under the <strong>1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)<\/strong> and the <strong>1994 Agreement<\/strong> relating to the <strong>Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the organization through which <strong>States Parties to UNCLOS<\/strong> <strong>organize and control all mineral-resources-related activities in the <em>Area<\/em><\/strong> for the benefit of humankind as a whole.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>international seabed area<\/strong> \u2013 the part which is under ISA jurisdiction \u2013 is the <strong>seabed and ocean floor and the subsoil<\/strong>, beyond the limits of national jurisdiction.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>international seabed area<\/strong> represents around <strong>50 % <\/strong>of the total area of the world\u2019s oceans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandate:<\/strong> ISA has the mandate to <strong>ensure the effective protection of the marine environment<\/strong> from harmful effects that may arise from deep-seabed-related activities.\n<ul>\n<li>It works to <strong>promote and encourage the conduct of marine scientific research<\/strong> in the seabed area and coordinate and disseminate the results of such research and analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Governance: <\/strong>Two principal organs of ISA are \u2013\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Assembly<\/strong>&#8211; Where all the members are represented and establishes the policies and govern the work of ISA.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Council<\/strong>&#8211; A 37-member Council elected by the Assembly. It has <strong>two advisory bodies<\/strong> \u2013\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Legal and Technical Commission (30 members)<\/strong>, which advises the Council on all matters relating to the exploration and exploitation of non-living marine resources, such as polymetallic nodules, polymetallic sulphides and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finance Committee<\/strong> (15 members) that deals with budgetary and related matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters:<\/strong> It has its headquarters in <strong>Kingston, Jamaica<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Members:<\/strong> <strong>All the States Parties to UNCLOS<\/strong> are <em>ipso facto<\/em> members of ISA.\n<ul>\n<li>As of 2 September 2024, ISA has <strong>170 Members, including 169 Member States and the European Union.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India is a founding and active member of ISA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is still far from finalising rules for extracting coveted metals on the high seas even after two weeks of negotiations.
