But for a <strong>Vice-Presidential vacancy<\/strong>, there is <strong>no such fixed deadline<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>only requirement<\/strong> is that the <strong>election be held \u201cas soon as possible\u201d<\/strong> after the post falls vacant.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Election Commission<\/strong> will announce the <strong>schedule<\/strong> and the <strong>poll<\/strong> is conducted under the <strong>Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As per convention, the <strong>Secretary General of either House of Parliament<\/strong> is appointed as the <strong>Returning Officer<\/strong>, in rotation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Election process<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Electoral College:<\/strong> The Vice-President is elected by an electoral college mad<strong>e up of members from both Houses of Parliament, including nominated members<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>state legislatures do not participate<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Voting:<\/strong> Voting is held by <strong>secret ballot<\/strong>, using the system of <strong>proportional representation<\/strong> with a <strong>single transferable vote<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Each MP casts a vote by <strong>ranking candidates<\/strong> in order of preference.<\/li>\n<li>All votes carry <strong>equal value<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Winning quota and its calculation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Quota:<\/strong> A candidate must reach <strong>a required minimum number of votes<\/strong>, called the <strong>quota<\/strong>, to be declared elected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calculation:<\/strong> This is calculated by <strong>dividing the total number of valid votes by two<\/strong> and <strong>adding one <\/strong>(fractions, if any, are ignored).\n<ul>\n<li>If <strong>no candidate crosses the quota<\/strong> in the <strong>first round<\/strong>, the one with the <strong>fewest first-preference<\/strong> votes is <strong>eliminated<\/strong>, and their votes are <strong>transferred to the remaining candidates<\/strong> based on <strong>second preferences<\/strong>. The process continues <strong>until one candidate crosses<\/strong> the quota.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tenure of new Vice-President<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The elected candidate will <strong>serve a full five-year term<\/strong> from the date of assuming office, not just the remainder of ex-VP&#8217;s tenure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eligibility criteria for candidates of Vice President: <\/strong>A person contesting for the post of Vice-President \u2013\n<ul>\n<li>must be a <strong>citizen<\/strong> of India<\/li>\n<li>at least <strong>35 years old<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>qualified<\/strong> to be elected to the Rajya Sabha<\/li>\n<li>registered as an <strong>elector in any<\/strong> parliamentary constituency<\/li>\n<li>must <strong>not hold any office of profit<\/strong> under the central or state governments, <strong>except<\/strong> positions like President, Governor, or Minister.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar is <strong>only the third Vice-President<\/strong> in India\u2019s history <strong>to resign<\/strong> before completing his term, after <strong>V. Giri and R.
