AIR News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a flagship initiative to <strong>promote the use of ethanol<\/strong> by blending it with <strong>petrol<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Launched in:<\/strong> It was launched in <strong>January, 2003.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nodal Ministry:<\/strong> Ministry of Petroleum &amp; Natural Gas (MoP&amp;NG)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> It sought to <strong>promote the use of alternative and environment friendly fuels<\/strong> and to <strong>reduce import dependency<\/strong> for energy requirements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Targets:<\/strong> As per the programme targets, India has to <strong>achieve 10% blending rate (E10) by 2021-22<\/strong> and <strong>20% blending rate (E20) by 2025-26. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>National Policy of Biofuels-2018<\/strong>, as amended in 2022, <strong>advanced<\/strong> the target of 20% blending of ethanol in petrol to Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025-26 from 2030.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coverage:<\/strong> It is being implemented <strong>across the country<\/strong> except Andaman and Nicobar Islands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Procurement of ethanol<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs)<\/strong> are to procure ethanol from domestic sources.<\/li>\n<li>Government has notified <strong>administered price of ethanol<\/strong> since 2014.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Status<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ethanol blending in petrol<\/strong> has risen from just <strong>1.5% in 2014 to 20% in 2025<\/strong>, a nearly 13-fold increase over 11 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethanol production<\/strong> has surged from 38 crore litres in 2014 to <strong>661.1 crore litres by June 2025.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Savings:<\/strong> India has saved approximately <strong>1.36 lakh crore rupees<\/strong> in foreign exchange by <strong>reducing its dependency<\/strong> on imported crude oil.<\/li>\n<li>About <strong>1.96 lakh crore rupees<\/strong> have been paid to <strong>distilleries<\/strong>, fueling the growth of the domestic biofuel industry.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, <strong>1.18 lakh crore rupees<\/strong> have been disbursed to <strong>farmers<\/strong>, thereby enhancing rural incomes and supporting the agricultural economy.<\/li>\n<li>The increased use of ethanol-blended petrol has helped r<strong>educe carbon dioxide emissions by 698 lakh tonnes<\/strong>, contributing to India\u2019s climate goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"height: 475px; width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 475px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 720px; height: 475px;\">\n<h2>About Ethanol<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ethanol is an <strong>anhydrous ethyl alcohol<\/strong> having chemical formula of <strong>C2H5OH<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Source:<\/strong> It can be produced from <strong>sugarcane, maize, wheat<\/strong>, etc. which are having <strong>high starch content<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In India, ethanol is mainly <strong>produced from sugarcane molasses<\/strong> by fermentation process.<\/li>\n<li>Ethanol can be <strong>mixed with gasoline<\/strong> to form different blends.<\/li>\n<li>As the ethanol molecule <strong>contains oxygen<\/strong>, it allows the engine to more <strong>completely combust<\/strong> the fuel, resulting in fewer emissions and thereby reducing the occurrence of environmental pollution.<\/li>\n<li>Since ethanol is <strong>produced from plants<\/strong> that harness the power of the sun, ethanol is also considered as <strong>renewable fuel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: India has successfully achieved 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol in 2025, five years ahead of its original target set for 2030.
