This movement starts the tsunami waves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Kind of Earthquake Causes a Tsunami?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Depth of the Earthquake<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>If the earthquake is <strong>shallow<\/strong> (close to the surface, between 0 and 70 km deep), it is more likely to cause a tsunami.<\/li>\n<li>Shallow quakes keep more of their energy and can move the sea floor a lot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deep earthquakes<\/strong> (below 70 km) lose energy before reaching the sea floor, so they don\u2019t usually cause tsunamis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Type of Movement<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Earthquakes caused by <strong>reverse faulting<\/strong> (where one part of the Earth\u2019s crust moves up over another) can push the sea floor <strong>up or down<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This vertical movement moves a <strong>huge amount of water<\/strong>, starting tsunami waves.<\/li>\n<li>This usually happens in <strong>subduction zones<\/strong>, where one tectonic plate slides under another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Magnitude (Strength)<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Tsunamis are mostly caused by <strong>strong earthquakes<\/strong> \u2014 magnitude <strong>7.0 or higher<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>biggest and most dangerous tsunamis<\/strong> come from earthquakes above <strong>8.0<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Stronger earthquakes release more energy, so they move the sea floor more and create <strong>larger waves<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where do these earthquakes happen often?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tsunami-causing earthquakes mostly happen at <strong>tectonic plate boundaries<\/strong>, especially at <strong>convergent boundaries<\/strong> (where one plate goes under another).<\/li>\n<li>Example: The <strong>Kuril-Kamchatka Trench<\/strong> near <strong>Russia<\/strong> is a dangerous area.
