{"id":343829,"date":"2025-08-01T16:08:04","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T10:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=343829"},"modified":"2025-08-01T16:08:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T10:38:04","slug":"wise-use-of-wetlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/wise-use-of-wetlands\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Wise Use of Wetlands&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Member countries of the Ramsar convention have adopted India\u2019s resolution on \u2018Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles for the wise use of Wetlands\u2019 at Ramsar COP15 in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<h2>About &#8220;Wise Use of Wetlands&#8221;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_343830\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-343830\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-343830\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Source-MIB.jpg?resize=340%2C415&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Source-MIB.jpg?resize=246%2C300&amp;ssl=1 246w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Source-MIB.jpg?w=704&amp;ssl=1 704w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-343830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; MIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>&#8220;wise use&#8221;<\/strong> of wetlands is the central philosophy of the <strong>Ramsar Convention.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Definition:<\/strong> The <strong>Ramsar Convention<\/strong> defines wise use of wetlands as the <strong>maintenance of wetlands\u2019 ecological character<\/strong>, achieved through the implementation of <strong>ecosystem approaches,<\/strong> within the context of <strong>sustainable development<\/strong>\u201d.\n<ul>\n<li>The wetland wise use concept focuses on <strong>ecological character; ecosystem approach and sustainable development. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decentralized approach:<\/strong> Wise use also recognises that <strong>management of wetlands<\/strong> should be <strong>decentralised<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Party obligations:<\/strong> Contracting Parties <strong>commit to work towards the wise use<\/strong> of all the wetlands and water resources in their territory, through n<strong>ational plans, policies and legislation, management actions and public education.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In <strong>1990<\/strong> the Contracting Parties adopted <strong>Guidelines for the implementation of the wise use concept<\/strong>. The Guidelines emphasized the importance of:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>adopting national wetland policies<\/strong>, either separately or as a component of wider initiatives such as national environmental action plans;<\/li>\n<li><strong>developing programmes<\/strong> covering wetland inventory, monitoring, research, training, education and public awareness;<\/li>\n<li><strong>developing integrated management<\/strong> <strong>plans<\/strong> at wetland sites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prohibited activities:<\/strong> The concept of \u201cwise use\u201d also prohibits a number of activities in notified wetlands including:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>conversion for non-wetland<\/strong> uses including encroachment of any kind; setting up of any <strong>industry<\/strong> and expansion of existing industries; disposal of <strong>construction and demolition waste<\/strong>; <strong>poaching<\/strong>; discharge of <strong>effluents<\/strong> among others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recent Developments in Wetland Conservation in India <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (<strong>NPCA<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>The Wetlands (Conservation and Management) <strong>Rules, 2017<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wetlands of India Portal (2021): <\/strong>Launched on <strong>October 2, 2021<\/strong>, this portal provides comprehensive information on India&#8217;s wetlands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wetlands Rejuvenation Programme<\/strong>: Initiated by MoEFCC in 2020, this program aims to rejuvenate over 500 wetlands across India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amrit Dharohar Scheme:<\/strong>Launched with the Union Budget 2023-24, the Amrit Dharohar Scheme is a key initiative aimed at optimizing wetland utilization over the next three years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Centre for Wetland Conservation and Management (CWCM): <\/strong>Established on World Wetland Day 2021, this center focuses on addressing research needs and knowledge gaps in wetland conservation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Ramsar Convention and India<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an international treaty for the <strong>conservation and wise use of wetlands<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is named after the <strong>Iranian city of Ramsar<\/strong>, on the Caspian Sea, where the treaty was signed on <strong>February 2, 1971.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> ratified the convention on <strong>February 1, 1982.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India has <strong>91 Ramsar Sites<\/strong> (1.36 million ha), which is the <strong>largest network in Asia<\/strong> and <strong>third largest globally. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Member countries of the Ramsar convention have adopted India\u2019s resolution on \u2018Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles for the wise use of Wetlands\u2019 at Ramsar COP15 in Zimbabwe.
