{"id":34385,"date":"2018-10-30T17:20:07","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T11:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34385"},"modified":"2018-10-30T17:20:07","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T11:50:07","slug":"paika-bidroha-to-be-named-as-1st-war-of-independence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/paika-bidroha-to-be-named-as-1st-war-of-independence\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Paika Bidroha\u2019 to be named as 1st War of Independence:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/paika-bidroha-to-be-named-as-1st-war-of-independence\/article19909264.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Paika Bidroha\u2019 to be named as 1st War of Independence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u2018Paika Bidroha\u2019 (Paika rebellion) of 1817 will find a place in the history books as \u2018the First War of Independence\u2019 from the next academic session.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Significance of the change:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paika Bidroha\u2019 took place four decades before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny is so far been regarded as the First War of Indian Independence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, to give concrete factual knowledge, the government is on the verge to ammend Paika Bidroha\u2019 of 1817 as \u2018the First War of Independence\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Who was the Paika Bidroha?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paika Bidroha, <\/span><b>was an armed rebellion against the British East India Company&#8217;s rule in Odisha <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1817. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Paikas rose in rebellion under their leader Bakshi Jagabandhu and, projecting Jagannath as the symbol of Odia unity. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rebellion quickly spread across most of Odisha before being ruthlessly put down by the company&#8217;s forces. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Who were the Paikas?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paikas were <\/span><b>essentially the peasant militias of the Gajapati rulers of Odisha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who rendered military service to the king during times of war while taking up cultivation during times of peace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Paikas were organised into three ranks distinguished by their occupation and the weapons they wielded. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These were <\/span><b>the Paharis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the bearers of shields and the khanda sword, <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The Banuas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who led distant expeditions and used matchlocks and <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The Dhenkiyas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; archers who also performed different duties in Odisha armies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Sepoy Mutiny, 1857:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sepoy Mutiny was a violent uprising against British rule in India in 1857. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known by other names: the Indian Mutiny, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, or the Indian Revolt of 1857.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It happened so that the Indian soldiers were discriminated on the basis of racism and were paid low salary. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this kind of outbreak happened only when the Indian soldiers were given cartridges which had a coating of grease that was made up of Cow and Pig fat. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was against the religious views of both Hindu and Muslim community. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were given false hopes by the company that all of this is rumour but when it came out to be all true, the soldiers lost their temper and resulted in a movement being called as Sepoy Mutiny.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Paika Bidroha\u2019 to be named as 1st War of Independence: Context: The \u2018Paika Bidroha\u2019 (Paika rebellion) of 1817 will find a place in the history books as \u2018the First War of Independence\u2019 from the next academic session.
