Research Gate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Mahanadi (literally meaning <strong>big river<\/strong>) is an important river of the Peninsular India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Source:<\/strong> It has its source in the northern foothills of <strong>Dandakaranya near Sihawa in Raipur District<\/strong> of Chhattisgarh at an elevation of <strong>442 m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Drainage basin<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>upper part of its drainage basin<\/strong> lies in the <strong>saucer-shaped basin<\/strong> called the <strong>&#8216;Chhattisgarh Plain&#8217;. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>53<\/strong> <strong>%<\/strong> of the drainage basin of this river lies in <strong>Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh<\/strong>, while <strong>47 per cent lies in Odisha<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The river is <strong>bounded<\/strong> in the north by <strong>Central India hills<\/strong>, in the south and east by the <strong>Eastern Ghats<\/strong> and in the west by <strong>Maikal hill range<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course of river<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>From its source, the river takes a north easterly course.<\/li>\n<li>Beyond <strong>Seorinarayan<\/strong> it flows <strong>eastwards<\/strong> and after entering <strong>Odisha<\/strong>, it turns southwards below the <strong>Hirakud Dam<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Further below it turns <strong>eastwards near Sonepur<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On reaching the <strong>Eastern Ghats<\/strong>, the river flows through a narrow Gorge for 23 km near <strong>Tikkarpara Range<\/strong> and finally emerges in a <strong>delta at Naraj<\/strong> 11 km west of <strong>Cuttack<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Falls into:<\/strong> The Mahanadi finally empties itself in the <strong>Bay of Bengal<\/strong> after flowing for a distance of <strong>857 km.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributaries:<\/strong> This basin is surrounded by hills on the north, west and south as a result of which a large number of tributaries join the main river from these sides.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Left bank tributaries:<\/strong> lb (251 km), the Mand (241 km), the Hasdo (333 km) and the Sheonath (383 km)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Right bank tributaries:<\/strong> Ong (204 km), the Jonk (196 km), and the Tel (295 km)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delta:<\/strong> The delta of Mahanadi spreads over an area of <strong>9,500 sq. km<\/strong> and is over <strong>150 km broad<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mahanadi Water Dispute<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Parties involved: <\/strong>The dispute is between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legal action and Tribunal formation: <\/strong>In November 2016, Odisha moved the Supreme Court seeking formation of a tribunal.\n<ul>\n<li>The Government of India constituted the <strong>Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal in 2018<\/strong> under the <strong>Inter-State Water Disputes Act<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 714.667px;\">\n<h2>Inter-State River Water Disputes Resolution in India<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Constitutional and legal framework<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">Article 262 of the Constitution:<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\"> It empowers Parliament to legislate for the adjudication of disputes relating to waters of inter-state rivers or river valleys.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>It also allows Parliament to bar the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and other courts over such disputes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">Entry 56 of the Union List:<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\"> Regulation and development of inter-State rivers and river valleys.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-family: inherit;
