So, Chronic HDV<\/strong> occurs only in people living with <strong>HBV<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chronic HDV infection<\/strong> is considered the <strong>most severe<\/strong> form of chronic viral hepatitis due to more <strong>rapid progression towards liver-related death<\/strong> and <strong>hepatocellular carcinoma<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carcinogenic:<\/strong> HDV has recently been <strong>classified as<\/strong> <strong>carcinogenic<\/strong> <strong>to humans<\/strong> by the <strong>International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) mongraph programme<\/strong>, just like hepatitis B and C.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vulnerable population:<\/strong> Populations that is more likely to have HBV and HDV co-infection include <strong>indigenous populations, recipients of haemodialysis and people who inject drugs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impact:<\/strong> HDV affects globally nearly <strong>5% (an estimated 12 million) of people<\/strong> who have a chronic infection with <strong>HBV<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>HDV is <strong>blood borne<\/strong> and transmission may occur <strong>through contact with infected human blood<\/strong> or other bodily <strong>fluids<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It may also be transmitted through <strong>sexual intercourse,<\/strong> or <strong>rarely<\/strong> from a <strong>mother to her child before or around birth (vertical transmission). <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>HDV can also spread <strong>within families in endemic areas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Symptoms usually include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, pale-coloured stools, jaundice (yellow eyes) and even fulminant hepatitis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There is <strong>no separate vaccine<\/strong> for hepatitis D.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>only way<\/strong> to stop it is by getting the <strong>hepatitis B vaccine<\/strong>, which protects against both viruses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>antiviral bulevirtide<\/strong> has emerged in Europe as an approved therapy offering improved outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently announced the reclassification of hepatitis D as cancerous, emphasising the urgency for preventing viral hepatitis, which is a growing public health crisis.
