Extreme Weather in Jammu & Kashmir<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Frequency and Impact:<\/strong> Between 2010 and 2022, J&K recorded 2,863 extreme weather events<\/strong> that caused 552 deaths<\/strong>, according to a 2024 IMD study. Thunderstorms and heavy rains were the most frequent, while flash floods, landslides, and snowstorms also struck regularly.<\/li>\n
  2. Patterns of Disasters:<\/strong> The study noted 1,942 thunderstorms<\/strong>, 409 heavy rain events<\/strong>, 186 landslides<\/strong>, and 168 flash floods<\/strong>. Heavy snow, though only 42 times<\/strong>, killed 182 people<\/strong>, the highest toll of any single event type. Flash floods caused 119 deaths<\/strong>, heavy rain 111<\/strong>, and landslides 71<\/strong>. Districts such as Kishtwar, Anantnag, Ganderbal, and Doda<\/strong> suffered the worst impacts.<\/li>\n

    1. Rising Temperatures and Glacial Lakes: <\/strong>The western Himalayas warmed at twice the rate<\/strong> of the Indian subcontinent after 2000. Warmer air holds more moisture, causing more intense precipitation<\/strong>. Glaciers have shrunk, creating unstable glacial lakes<\/strong>. Heavy rain can overflow these lakes, sending down slush and sediment, and causing severe downstream destruction.<\/li>\n
    2. Changing Western Disturbances:<\/strong> Western disturbances<\/strong>, traditionally dominant in winter, now occur beyond the season. Global warming has intensified their impact, as a rapidly warming Arabian Sea<\/strong> feeds them more moisture. This leads to heavier rainfall and frequent floods<\/strong> in Himalayan states, including J&K.<\/li>\n
    3. Vulnerable Topography<\/strong>: <\/strong>J&K\u2019s mountainous terrain<\/strong> makes it highly vulnerable.
