It forms part of Indonesia\u2019s <strong>Greater Sunda Islands<\/strong> chain.<\/li>\n<li>It is ranked as the <strong>11th largest island in the world<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is shaped by <strong>four interconnecting peninsulas and s<\/strong>urrounded by other large islands:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Borneo<\/strong> (west)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Philippines<\/strong> (north)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maluku Islands<\/strong> (east)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flores &amp; Timor<\/strong> (south)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>It is<\/b>\u00a0<strong>highly mountainous island<\/strong> with some <strong>active volcanoes<\/strong>. It was once entirely covered with <strong>rainforests<\/strong>, but large areas have been lost to deforestation.<\/li>\n<li>It contains <strong>13 freshwater lakes<\/strong>, including <strong>Lake Matano<\/strong>, the <strong>deepest lake in Southeast Asia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The highest peak is <strong>Mount Ratenkombola (Mario)<\/strong>, standing at <strong>3,455 meters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is home to <strong>seven major ethnic groups<\/strong>: Toala, Toraja, Buginese, Makassarese, Minahasan, Mori, and Gorontalese.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Makassar<\/strong> is the island\u2019s <strong>largest city<\/strong> and an important cultural and economic hub.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Sulawesi, Indonesia.
