The 2022 milestone was <strong>missed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Signal of systemic deprivation: Experts call persistent stunting <strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>the tip of the iceberg of deprivation,\u201d<\/strong> pointing to structural deficits beyond program design.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Maternal health and early-life factors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Stunting begins before or at birth: Nearly half<\/strong> of stunted children are already <strong>small at birth<\/strong>, linking outcomes to maternal health and care.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adolescent pregnancy and early childbearing: Teen pregnancies<\/strong> raise risks because bodies are <strong>not ready<\/strong>. Despite laws, <strong>child marriage persists<\/strong>; <strong>7%<\/strong> of women <strong>15\u201319<\/strong>had begun childbearing (<strong>2019\u201321<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Caesarean deliveries and breastfeeding initiation:<\/strong> C-sections rose from <strong>9% (2005\u201306)<\/strong> to <strong>22%+ (2021)<\/strong>. They can <strong>delay colostrum and early breastfeeding<\/strong> when mothers are unwell or infants are shifted to <strong>SNCU\/NICU<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exclusive breastfeeding and class divides:<\/strong> Only <strong>64%<\/strong> of infants under six months are <strong>exclusively breastfed<\/strong>. <strong>Leave entitlements<\/strong> benefit salaried mothers; informal workers <strong>return early<\/strong>, limiting feeding frequency.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Diet and nutrition deficits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Carbohydrate-heavy household diets:<\/strong> Poor households rely on <strong>rice-heavy<\/strong> meals. Pulses or protein are <strong>infrequent<\/strong>, as seen in some <strong>Adivasi<\/strong> communities.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Inadequate child diets in 6\u201323 months:<\/strong> Only <strong>~11%<\/strong> of children under two meet the <strong>minimum acceptable diet<\/strong> for diversity and meal frequency.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Limited protein and micronutrient access:<\/strong> Some States added <strong>eggs<\/strong> to Anganwadi meals, yet <strong>protein and micronutrient<\/strong> access remains <strong>limited<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong> High anaemia among women and children:<\/strong> Anaemia is <strong>widespread<\/strong>: <strong>57%<\/strong> of women <strong>15\u201349<\/strong> and <strong>67%<\/strong> of under-fives (<strong>2019\u201321<\/strong>), undermining growth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Sanitation, infection, and growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Unsafe water and open defecation:<\/strong> <strong>19%<\/strong> of households practiced <strong>open defecation (2019\u201321)<\/strong>, contaminating groundwater and increasing infections.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Gut health and the malnutrition\u2013<\/strong><strong>infection cycle<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Unsanitary conditions <strong>damage gut microbiota<\/strong> and absorption.
