{"id":344863,"date":"2025-08-21T16:02:26","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T10:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=344863"},"modified":"2025-08-21T16:02:26","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T10:32:26","slug":"globally-important-agricultural-heritage-systems-giahs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/globally-important-agricultural-heritage-systems-giahs\/","title":{"rendered":"Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News<\/strong>&#8211; According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), India currently hosts three Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).<\/p>\n<h2>About Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>They are dynamic, community-managed farming systems that combine agrobiodiversity, traditional knowledge, and cultural heritage to promote sustainable livelihoods and ensure food security.<\/li>\n<li>Till date, the <em>FAO has recognized 99 such systems across 29 countries<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Recent additions to the list include a mountain <em>agropastoral system in Tajikistan<\/em>, marking <em>Central Asia\u2019s first GIAHS site<\/em>.\n<ul>\n<li>Other new inclusions are a pine tree agroforestry system and a traditional bamboo-fishery system in South Korea, and an agrosilvopastoral system in Portugal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>India\u2019s Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Koraput region, Odisha<\/strong>: This region is renowned for highland subsistence paddy cultivation and a rich variety of indigenous rice strains. It also preserves medicinal plants that are linked to tribal knowledge systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kuttanad farming system, Kerala<\/strong>: This unique below-sea-level agriculture model integrates paddy fields, coconut gardens, inland fisheries, and shell collection within a wetland ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saffron Heritage of Kashmir<\/strong>: It represents a rich agro-pastoral system characterized by traditional saffron cultivation, intercropping, and the use of organic farming practices, all of which contribute to maintaining local biodiversity and soil health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News&#8211; According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), India currently hosts three Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).
