{"id":34500,"date":"2018-10-31T11:33:39","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34500"},"modified":"2018-10-31T11:33:39","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:03:39","slug":"more-species-of-snakehead-fish-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/more-species-of-snakehead-fish-found\/","title":{"rendered":"More species of snakehead fish found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/science\/more-species-of-snakehead-fish-found\/article19896374.ece\">More species of snakehead fish found<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Confusions over snakehead fish species identity need not bother ichthyologists any more, as a global digital database of the species has been developed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Introduction:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A global collaborative initiative involving as many as 10 scientific institutions has barcoded these freshwater fish varieties, which got their name from their unique snakelike snout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Locations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The members of the species are found distributed from the Middle East to eastern Asia, Central and West Africa and the Nile.<\/li>\n<li>Earlier, it was widely believed that there were 38 species in this group.<\/li>\n<li>However, DNA-level analysis showed that there were several more species than first thought.<\/li>\n<li>The species strength of snakeheads could be 53 or even more, said Rajeev Raghavan, Assistant professor of the Kerala University for Fisheries and Ocean Studies, Kochi, which is one of the partnering institutions in the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Snakeheads:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The snakeheads are members of the freshwater perciform fish family Channidae, native to parts of Africa and Asia.<\/li>\n<li>These elongated, predatory fish are distinguished by their long dorsal fins, large month, and shiny teeth.<\/li>\n<li>They breathe air with grills, which allows them to migrate short distance over land.<\/li>\n<li>They have suprabranchial organs developing when they grow older.<\/li>\n<li>Snakeheads are of great demand in the domestic market for food as well as for ornamental purposes<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s mostly the brightly coloured ones from northeastern India that find their way into aquaria.<\/li>\n<li>The barcoding also succeeded in identifying new species\u00a0<em>Channa<\/em>from Assam, foothills of Bhutan, Myanmar and another one from Congo.<\/li>\n<li>The analysis of the data revealed that the eastern Himalaya and the adjoining region of Myanmar were hotspots for snakehead diversity, as up to 10 snakehead species described during the last quarter century originated from this region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Present status:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India is presently home to 15 species of\u00a0Channa and the species diversity could go up as more studies would be undertaken.<\/li>\n<li>Four currently known species \u2014\u00a0<strong>Channa bank anensis\u00a0<\/strong>found in Indonesia and Malaysia,\u00a0<strong>Channa marulius,\u00a0Channa striata<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Channa gachua<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 found in the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia, are considered species complexes, where different species are currently known under a single name because their taxonomy is poorly known or studied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conservation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More taxonomic studies on the species complexes are required for conservation purposes as many of the currently wide ranging species are listed as <strong>of \u201cleast concern\u201d in the Red List of IUCN.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>One of the criteria for assessing a species as of least concern is its wide distribution.<\/li>\n<li>The breaking down of the species complex into individual species may have a different story to tell about its distribution which may prompt the scientific community to think for more species-specific conservation programs, felt researchers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More species of snakehead fish found Context: Confusions over snakehead fish species identity need not bother ichthyologists any more, as a global digital database of the species has been developed.
