The visit is seen as significant for giving fresh momentum to Indian diplomacy in the region.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Current Geopolitical Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>India\u2013US Relations:<\/strong> India\u2019s ties with the US have seen <strong>tensions over trade<\/strong>, technology restrictions, and policy differences on Russia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>China Factor:<\/strong> China has emerged as a manufacturing powerhouse, creating economic vulnerabilities for India due to trade <strong>deficits (almost $100 billion)<\/strong> and dependence on imports.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Russia\u2019s Tilt:<\/strong> Russia, once a close partner of India, is now increasingly <strong>aligned with China<\/strong>, thereby complicating India\u2019s foreign policy choices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Strategic Partnership with Japan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Shared Vision:<\/strong> India and Japan share a common interest in maintaining a free, open, and stable Indo-Pacific region.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic &amp; Infrastructure Cooperation: <\/strong>The two countries are collaborating on infrastructure, technology partnerships, and diversification of global supply chains.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Defence &amp; Security: <\/strong>Defence and security cooperation are deepening through joint exercises like <strong>Malabar <\/strong>and India\u2019s participation in the <strong>QUAD <\/strong>grouping.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balancing China: <\/strong>Japan also provides economic opportunities and acts as a reliable partner for India in balancing China\u2019s influence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>India and the SCO<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opportunities:<\/strong> The SCO offers India a platform for <strong>counter-terrorism<\/strong> cooperation and regional dialogue with Central Asian states.\n<ul>\n<li>The forum also provides an opportunity to participate in discussions on <strong>connectivity and infrastructure<\/strong>, even though India remains wary of China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenges: Pakistan\u2019s presence<\/strong> within the SCO complicates India\u2019s security concerns and limits the effectiveness of the grouping. China\u2019s consistent shielding of Pakistan on issues of terrorism demonstrates the contradictions within the SCO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Engage with SCO: <\/strong>India needs to continue engaging with the SCO to <strong>avoid isolation in the regional security framework<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthen Partnerships: <\/strong>India should strengthen its partnerships with <strong>Japan, the US, and ASEAN nations<\/strong> to counterbalance China\u2019s dominance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduce Dependence on China: <\/strong>Reducing economic dependence on Chinese imports and <strong>promoting self-reliance<\/strong> in manufacturing and technology is critical for strategic autonomy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Support Neighbors: <\/strong>India should take a proactive role in supporting smaller South Asian states like Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh to prevent them from falling under China\u2019s influence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Question: <\/strong>India\u2019s Asian diplomacy today involves balancing engagement with forums like the SCO while deepening strategic partnerships with democratic allies such as Japan.
