{"id":34531,"date":"2018-10-31T11:41:48","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:11:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34531"},"modified":"2018-10-31T11:41:48","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:11:48","slug":"andaman-sea-region-india-eyes-military-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/andaman-sea-region-india-eyes-military-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Andaman sea region, India eyes military expansion\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/india-eyes-military-expansion-sitharaman-to-spend-diwali-with-soldiers-in-andaman-tri-service-command-4897373\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andaman sea region, India eyes military expansion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Delhi is working on expanding the military effectiveness of its outpost at the juncture of Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, country\u2019s only tri-service command.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reasons <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To dominates the strategically important Malacca Strait.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countering the increasing Chinese presence in the region, which has been a cause of concern<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Inititatives <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The airstrip at INAS Baaz, the naval aviation base on Campbell Bay on the Great Nicobar island, is currently being extended from 3,050 feet to 10,000 feet. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The extension, which will allow the Navy to place its modern P-8I surveillance aircraft at INAS Baaz<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is scheduled to be completed by 2021. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will increase our surveillance reach by thousand miles. \u00a0which will cover South China Sea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baaz is adjacent to Malacca straits, an area of immense strategic interest to us<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Navy currently operates its eight P-8I aircraft, procured from the US in 2013, from INS Rajali base at Arakonam in Tamil Nadu.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Navy also plans to commission its second Floating Dry Dock Navy (FDDN) \u2014 constructed by L&amp;T \u2014 near Port Blair by December, <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a dockyard under completion. This will allow more naval ships to be maintained and serviced in the islands.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Navy is also in the process of constructing three forward operating bases (FOBs) in the islands \u2014 at Diglipur, Kamorta and at Campbell Bay \u2014 to allow its Khukri class corvettes to be distributed across various locations in the archipelago.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note: khukri class<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Khukri class corvettes are equipped with Diesel Engines assembled in India, under license by Kirloskar Group.
