{"id":34544,"date":"2018-10-31T11:45:52","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34544"},"modified":"2018-10-31T11:45:52","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:15:52","slug":"rohingya-crisis-worse-than-syrias-says-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rohingya-crisis-worse-than-syrias-says-un\/","title":{"rendered":"Rohingya crisis worse than Syria\u2019s, says UN:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/rohingya-crisis-worse-than-syrias-says-un\/article19879245.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rohingya crisis worse than Syria\u2019s, says UN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of Rohingya, a balance has to be struck between national interest and human rights as the issue involved national security, economic interests and humanity. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Who are the Rohingyas?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohingya are an <\/span><b>ethnic Muslim minority group living primarily in Myanmar\u2019s western Rakhine state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They practice a Sufi-inflected variation of Sunni Islam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The estimated one million Rohingya in Myanmar account for nearly a third of Rakhine\u2019s population.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohingya differ <\/span><b>from Myanmar\u2019s dominant Buddhist groups ethnically, linguistically, and religiously<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the crisis?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohingya crisis is a <\/span><b>human rights crisis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large number of Muslim Rohingya have fled Myanmar, many crossing by land into Bangladesh, while others take to the sea to reach Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unfair policies of the Myanmar government in Rakhine state have resulted hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee since the late 1970s.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why India \u2013 Myanmar relation is important?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myanmar is critical for <\/span><b>maintaining stability and peace in Northeast India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Northeast Indian insurgent groups operate out of bases across the border. Therefore, <\/span><b>responding to the groups mandates cooperation and consent of the Myanmar army<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current Indo-Myanmar meeting is <\/span><b>an attempt to assuage above concerns and ensure continued cooperation between the two militaries on counter-insurgency issues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to security issues, Myanmar is a fast growing economy and is a land bridge to Southeast Asia is <\/span><b>prompting Indian leaders to reach out to the country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>International Organization for Migration<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>International Organization for Migration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>IOM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an intergovernmental organization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides services and advice concerning migration to governments and migrants, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and migrant workers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the principal <\/span><b>intergovernmental organization <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the field of migration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IOM&#8217;s stated mission is to <\/span><b>promote humane and orderly migration <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rohingya and IOM: a critical condition of the Rohingyas<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to International Organization for Migration (IOM) about 18,000 Rohingya Muslims are estimated to have crossed into Bangladesh in the last week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangladesh, IOM and its partners are now struggling to provide adequate shelter, food, clean water, healthcare and protection to hundreds of thousands camped out over the vast muddy sites that now dot Cox\u2019s Bazar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IOM has appealed to the international community for USD 120 million.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without it, families continue to suffer in the open or under inadequate plastic sheeting under daily, heavy rain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of clean water and sanitation, which has already led to fecal contamination of water sources, will lead to outbreaks of water-borne diseases, including cholera.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a lack of protection will make the refugees \u2013 particularly women and children \u2013 targets for human traffickers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Supreme Court judgment:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court has deferred the deportation of Rohingya Muslim refugees from India till its next hearing on November 21. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Till then, the Rohingya petitioners can approach the Supreme Court in case of any contingency.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Supreme Court reminded the government that it has multiple responsibilities, and must balance national and humanitarian values.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It said the Rohingya Muslims issue is of great magnitude and the state has a big role to play.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the way forward?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a <\/span><b>need to support the efforts of the Bangladesh Government <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to provide immediate aid to the half million people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also an <\/span><b>urgent need to reverse the situation, stabilize the region and help them to return home<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rohingya crisis worse than Syria\u2019s, says UN:\u00a0 Context: In the case of Rohingya, a balance has to be struck between national interest and human rights as the issue involved national security, economic interests and humanity.
