Context:<\/strong> Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation<\/strong> (SCO), which was attended by China\u2019s President Xi Jinping, Russia\u2019s President Vladimir Putin, and Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.<\/p>\n

Origins and Structure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. The SCO traces its roots to the Shanghai Five,<\/strong> formed in 1996 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan for border security and trust-building.<\/li>\n
  2. In 2001, Uzbekistan joined, and the grouping became the SCO.<\/li>\n
  3. The organisation is headed by the Council of Heads of State<\/strong>. It is its top decision-making body.<\/li>\n
  4. It also operates through the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS)<\/strong> to coordinate on security and terrorism-related issues.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
