{"id":34582,"date":"2018-10-31T12:03:20","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34582"},"modified":"2018-10-31T12:03:20","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:33:20","slug":"itbp-raises-maiden-mechanised-column","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/itbp-raises-maiden-mechanised-column\/","title":{"rendered":"ITBP raises maiden mechanised column:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/itbp-raises-maiden-mechanised-column\/article19868006.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITBP raises maiden mechanised column<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) is deploying a mechanised column of power vehicles and machines to speedily mobilise troops along the India-China border in case of Doklam-like standoffs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defence ministry had recently decided to significantly enhance infrastructure along this border including around the areas of dispute with the Chinese forces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mechanised column of the force will comprise over 250 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snow scooters, excavators and few other medium-lift four-wheeled vehicles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The force has about 30 border posts above the height of 15,000 feet and some 50 posts above 12,000 feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Home Ministry has accorded sanctions to the ITBP to have at least one snow scooter at each of these frontier bases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The force has also been given sanctions to upgrade its firepower by modernizing the support weapons like 81mm mortars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through this move government has decided to strengthen the assets and strength of the both the army and the ITBP.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why \u00a0was this decision taken?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is essential to have a mechanized column in the ITBP as it secures the border in peacetime and will bear the first onslaught in case of a war or a conflict.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presently, only the Border Security Force that guards the India-Pakistan border had an artillery unit and some mechanized components to aid it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Army has the mechanized infantry, it is essential to have a mechanized column in the ITBP.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the ITBP secures the border in peacetime and will bear the first onslaught in case of a war or a conflict.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is<\/b> <b>Mechanized infantry?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mechanized infantry are infantry equipped with armored personnel carriers (APCs) or infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for transport and combat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mechanized infantry is distinguished from motorized infantry in that its vehicles provide a degree of protection from hostile fire, as opposed to \u201csoft-skinned\u201d wheeled vehicles (trucks or jeeps) for motorized infantry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most APCs and IFVs are fully tracked or are all-wheel drive vehicles (6\u00d76 or 8\u00d78), for mobility across rough ground.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some nations distinguish between mechanized and armored infantry, designating troops carried by APCs as mechanized and those in IFVs as armored<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>ITBP (The Indo Tibetan Border Police):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ITBP was conceived on Oct 24, 1962.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a multi-directional force.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presently the battalion of ITBP deployed on border guarding duties from Karakoram Pass in Ladak to Jachep la in Arunachal Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What problems ITBP is facing?
