{"id":34596,"date":"2018-10-31T12:05:26","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34596"},"modified":"2018-10-31T12:05:26","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T06:35:26","slug":"ngt-seeks-report-on-ganga-clean-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/ngt-seeks-report-on-ganga-clean-up\/","title":{"rendered":"NGT seeks report on Ganga clean-up:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/ngt-seeks-status-report-on-clean-up-of-ganga-river\/article19867965.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGT seeks report on Ganga clean-up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Green Tribunal has directed the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh and the Uttarakhand governments to file affidavits stating instructions to clean the Ganga in the stretch between Gomukh and Unnao.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the instructions directed by the NGT?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The green panel had passed a slew of directions to rejuvenate the Ganga, declaring as \u2018No Development Zone\u2019 an area of 100 metres from the edge of the river between Haridwar and Unnao<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has further strictly prohibited the dumping of waste within 500 meters from the river.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bench headed by NGT Chairperson has asked all the stakeholders to state the course of action between Phase-2 from Kanpur to the U.P. border.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What will happen if the implementation is not done?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGT has sent a copy of the order to be provided to the chief secretaries of U.P. and Uttarakhand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another copy of this order shall sent to DG of National Mission for Clean Ganga; Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for compliance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How severe is the issue of pollution of Ganga?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollution of the Ganga poses significant threats to human health and the larger environment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ganges is considered to be the fifth most polluted river in the world<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2006 measurement of pollution in the Ganga revealed that river water monitoring had demonstrated fecal coliform counts up to 100,000,000 MPN <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the major causes of pollution in Ganga?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main causes of water pollution in the Ganga river are:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Industrial waste<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumping of various harmful industrial waste into the river<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Human waste<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A large proportion of the sewage water with higher organic load in the Ganges is from this population through domestic water usage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Industrial waste<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial effluents are about 12% of the total volume of effluent reaching the Ganga. Although a relatively low proportion, they are a cause for major concern because they are often toxic and non-biodegradable.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The increase in the population density<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various human activities (such as bathing, washing clothes, and the bathing of animals)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Religious traditions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During festival seasons, over 70 million people bathe in the Ganga to clean themselves from their past sins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some materials like food, waste or leaves are left in the Ganga which are responsible for its pollution.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>About NGT<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Green Tribunal was set up under National Green Tribunal Act,2010 with an aim to provide protection to environment,conservation of forests and other natural resources along with enforcement of legal rights for environment and giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGT since its inception have taken various steps in order to reduce the menace of pollution and other activities adversely impacting the environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some of the recent steps by the tribunal include order of <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>banning diesel vehicles older than 10 years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the national capital along with <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>ban on burning of solid waste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.These steps have been taken owing to the rising pollution levels which is evident from the the list of most polluted cities where the national capital stands on the top.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>cancellation of coal block clearance in Hasdee-Arand forests <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overriding central government&#8217;s decision,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sterlite case and Meghalaya \u00a0mining.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Yamuna Conservation Zone<\/b><b>&#8211;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 25 April 2014, the NGT said that the health of Yamuna will be affected by the proposed recreational facilities on the river.
