DRDO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Radar is the <strong>acronym for Radio Detection And Ranging.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a specialized <strong>electronic system that uses radio waves <\/strong>to determine the direction, distance (using time delay), and velocity (through Doppler Shift) of target objects.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uses:<\/strong> Radars are used by the military to search, detect, identify, and help destroy aerial threats.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Components:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Transmitter:<\/strong> Sends out <strong>radio signals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Receiver:<\/strong> Collects reflected signals from targets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Types of radars:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Surveillance radars:<\/strong> These systems continuously surveil the skies to detect aerial objects, whose detections are analysed by an operator, increasingly with computer assistance, for identification.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fire control radars:<\/strong> These systems provide targeting support to surface-to-air guns or missiles so that identified aerial threats can be engaged effectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Radar Cross-Sections\u00a0(RCS):<\/strong> It is a measure of how detectable an object is by radar, usually represented in sq. m.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>larger the RCS, greater the detectability<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The RCS is <strong>not only the function of the size<\/strong> of an aerial object but also its <strong>specific design features<\/strong>: the basic thrust of modern stealth technology is to reduce an aircraft\u2019s RCS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Indian Defence Forces&#8217; Radar Capabilities<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Both the <strong>army and the Indian Air Force<\/strong> have both <strong>surveillance<\/strong> and f<strong>ire control<\/strong> radars, including Low Level Light Weight Radars (<strong>LLLRs<\/strong>) for low-altitude.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indian Army<\/strong> primarily uses <strong>Flycatchers<\/strong> (indigenously upgraded Super Fledermaus\/USFM) and the <strong>AD tactical control radar for fire control. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>IAF<\/strong> controls most<strong> high- and medium-power radars <\/strong>with ranges of up to several hundred kilometres for higher-altitude tracking of larger threats such as fighter jets, transport aircraft, and AWACS.<\/li>\n<li>IAF employs <strong>fire control radars<\/strong> including the <strong>3D central acquisition radar and the Rajendra radar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Air Defence Infrastructure<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Missile systems:<\/strong> India has the Russian S-400 system and the indigenous Akash missile system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Army<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Akashteer system:<\/strong> It integrates radars, sensors, air defence guns, and communications to generate a real-time operational air picture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>IAF<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s IACCS (Integrated Air Command and Control System):<\/strong> It unifies data from multiple assets to enable coordinated detection and interception.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mission Sudarshan Chakra:<\/strong> It is an ongoing modernisation programme;
