{"id":346570,"date":"2025-09-20T16:44:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T11:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=346570"},"modified":"2025-09-20T16:44:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T11:14:07","slug":"maternal-mortality-mm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/maternal-mortality-mm\/","title":{"rendered":"Maternal Mortality (MM)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News: <\/strong>Recently, Puducherry has emerged as the first Union Territory in the country to bring down maternal mortality to zero.<\/p>\n<h2>About Maternal Mortality (MM)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_346588\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-346588\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-346588\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Source-PIB-2.jpg?resize=388%2C106&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Source-PIB-2.jpg?resize=300%2C82&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Source-PIB-2.jpg?resize=768%2C209&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Source-PIB-2.jpg?w=884&amp;ssl=1 884w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 388px) 100vw, 388px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-346588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Maternal mortality refers to the <strong>death of a woman during pregnancy or within 42 days of pregnancy termination.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The cause of death <strong>must be related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management,<\/strong> excluding accidental or incidental causes.<\/li>\n<li>It is a critical public health issue, highlighting the <strong>quality and accessibility of healthcare services<\/strong> for women.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Indicators of Maternal Mortality:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR): <\/strong>It is defined as the number of <strong>maternal deaths per 100,000 live births<\/strong> during a given time period<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As per the Sample Registration System <strong>(SRS) Report 2021<\/strong>, the MMR of the country has shown a marked reduction, <strong>declining by 37 points from 130 per lakh live births in 2014\u201316 to 93 in 2019\u201321.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>SDG Target:<\/strong> India is committed to achieving the <strong data-start=\"87\" data-end=\"125\">Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)<\/strong> target of reducing the <strong data-start=\"149\" data-end=\"183\">Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR)<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"187\" data-end=\"217\">70 per 100,000 live births<\/strong> by <strong data-start=\"221\" data-end=\"229\">2030<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Trends in Maternal Mortality in India<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>WHO Certification for Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination<\/strong>: On May 15, 2015, India was certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>States Meeting SDG Target for MMR<\/strong>: Eight states\u2014Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Karnataka\u2014have <strong>achieved the SDG target<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Findings from the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-21)<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Antenatal Care (ANC) Visits<\/strong>: The proportion of pregnant women who had an ANC visit in the first trimester increased from 59% (NFHS-4, 2015-16) to 70% (NFHS-5, 2019-21).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Four or More ANC Visits<\/strong>: The percentage of women receiving the recommended four or more ANC visits increased from 51% (2015-16) to 59% (2019-21).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Institutional Births<\/strong>: Institutional births rose significantly from 79% (2015-16) to 89% (2019-21) at the national level. In Kerala, Goa, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu, institutional delivery is 100%.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rural vs Urban Institutional Births<\/strong>: In rural areas, about 87% of births occur in institutions, compared to 94% in urban areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Recently, Puducherry has emerged as the first Union Territory in the country to bring down maternal mortality to zero.
