In 2007, the Ministry of Small Scale Industries and the Ministry of Agro and Rural Industries were merged to form the Ministry of Micro, Small &amp; Medium Enterprises.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b><a id=\"h2\"><\/a>What is the role of MSMEs in India\u2019s economic growth?<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Job Creation &amp; Livelihood Opportunities:<\/b>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSMEs are the largest source of non-agricultural employment in India, providing jobs primarily to semi-skilled and unskilled workers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government programs like PM Vishwakarma and Mudra Yojana have expanded self-employment prospects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, more than 1 crore registered MSMEs employ nearly 7.5 crore people across the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Contribution to GDP &amp; Industrial Development:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSMEs play a pivotal role in India\u2019s economic framework, accounting for around 30% of the GDP and 45% of the total manufacturing output.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They play a crucial role in industrial clusters by supplying raw materials and intermediates to large industries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Udyam portal has streamlined the formalization of MSMEs, promoting a more structured and organized industrial sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Rural Development: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">51% of MSMEs are located in rural areas. In contrast to large corporations, MSMEs have aided in the industrialization of rural areas at a low capital cost. The sector has made significant contributions to rural socio-economic growth while also supplementing major industries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Enhancing Exports &amp; Foreign Exchange Reserves:<\/b>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023-24, MSMEs contributed 45.73% of India\u2019s total exports, reinforcing their vital role in international trade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schemes such as the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) program have strengthened MSMEs\u2019 integration into global supply chains.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Advancing Digital &amp; Technological Innovations:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initiatives like the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) are fostering digital transformation within the MSME sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, 72% of MSME transactions are conducted digitally, enhancing financial inclusion and operational efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Social Inclusion: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Annual Report of The Ministry of MSMEs (2021-22), the socially backward groups owned almost 66.27% of MSMEs. Only about 1.1 crore of the 6.3 crore MSMEs are registered with the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, and the number of income tax filers is even lower. As a result of limited availability and access to data, as well as legacy underwriting methods, the credit requirements of Indian MSMEs have largely gone unmet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Access to Technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of MSMEs use outdated technology that prevents them from keeping up with the modern world.
