MoSPI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI)<\/strong> adopted the <strong>UN System of Environmental Economic Accounts (SEEA) Framework in 2018<\/strong> for compiling environmental economic accounts.<\/li>\n<li>This is the <strong>first publication focusing specifically on forest accounting, presenting comprehensive national and state-level forest accounts<\/strong> in accordance with the SEEA framework.<\/li>\n<li>It has been <strong>published in two volumes &#8211; <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Volume I<\/strong>\u00a0provides methodology and national-level data on various forest ecosystem accounts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Volume II <\/strong>focuses on state and Union Territory (UT) level data, presenting decadal changes in forest assets, extent, condition, and services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Sources: <\/strong><strong>India State of Forest Report (ISFR)<\/strong> and other sources such as <strong>Forestry\u00a0Statistics 2021 (ICFRE), SEEA frameworks, NCAVES Report, National Accounts Statistics, MoSPI.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance:<\/strong> It <strong>highlights the vital role of forests in providing essential services like carbon retention and timber production,<\/strong> with a focus on regeneration, conservation, and sustainable management at both national and state levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Findings from the Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 175px;width: 100%;border-collapse: collapse;border-style: solid\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 150px\">\n<td style=\"width: 18.1509%;height: 94px\"><strong>Physical Asset Account<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 81.8491%;height: 94px\">\n<ul>\n<li>Between 2010-11 and 2021-22, India\u2019s forest cover grew by <strong>17,444.61 sq. km<\/strong> (22.50%), covering <strong>7.15 lakh sq. km<\/strong> (21.76% of India&#8217;s geographical area).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major contributors to forest cover increase are:<\/strong> <strong>Kerala<\/strong>: 4,137 sq. km, <strong>Karnataka<\/strong>: 3,122 sq. km and <strong>Tamil Nadu:<\/strong> 2,606 sq. km<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 150px\">\n<td style=\"width: 18.1509%;height: 61px\"><strong>Extent Account<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 81.8491%;height: 61px\">\n<ul>\n<li>Between 2013-2023, India\u2019s forest extent saw a net increase of <strong>3,356 sq. km<\/strong> due to reclassification and boundary adjustments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>States with notable rise in Recorded Forest Area (RFA): Uttarakhand<\/strong>: 6.3% increase, <strong>Odisha<\/strong>: 1.97% increase and <strong>Jharkhand<\/strong>: 1.9% increase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px\">\n<td style=\"width: 18.1509%;height: 10px\"><strong>Condition Account<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 81.8491%;height: 10px\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Growing stock<\/strong>, which reflects usable wood volume in living trees, increased by <strong>305.53 million cubic meters<\/strong> (7.32%) between 2013 and 2023.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leading contributors to growing stock:<\/strong> <strong>Madhya Pradesh:<\/strong> 136 million cubic meters, <strong>Chhattisgarh:<\/strong> 51 million cubic meters and <strong>Telangana<\/strong>: 28 million cubic meters<\/li>\n<li>Among UTs, <strong>Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands<\/strong> contributed <strong>77 million cubic meters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px\">\n<td style=\"width: 18.1509%;height: 10px\"><strong>Services Account<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 81.8491%;height: 10px\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Provisioning Services<\/strong>: The value of provisioning services (timber and non-timber) rose from <strong>\u20b930.72 thousand crore<\/strong> in 2011-12 to <strong>\u20b937.93 thousand crore<\/strong> in 2021-22 (0.16% of GDP in 2021-22).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top contributors by state:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Maharashtra<\/strong>: \u20b923.78 thousand crore, <strong>Gujarat<\/strong>: \u20b914.15 thousand crore and <strong>Kerala<\/strong>: \u20b98.55 thousand crore<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regulating Services (Carbon Retention)<\/strong>: The value of carbon retention services grew by <strong>51.82%<\/strong>, from <strong>\u20b9409.1 thousand crore<\/strong> in 2015-16 to <strong>\u20b9620.97 thousand crore<\/strong> in 2021-22.
