News:<\/strong> Recently, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala<\/strong> received the instruments of acceptance of the Agreement from Brazil, Kenya, Vietnam, and Tonga,<\/strong> raising the total number of acceptances beyond the two-thirds threshold of WTO members required for the Agreement to enter into force.<\/p>\n

About WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies<\/h2>\n

  • It establishes new, binding, multilateral rules<\/strong> for curbing harmful subsidies, which are a key factor in the widespread depletion of the world\u2019s fish stocks.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Under the agreement, the WTO Fish Fund has been established t<\/strong>o provide technical assistance and capacity-building support to developing and least-developed countries for implementing the Agreement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Adopted at <\/strong><\/td>\nWTO\u2019s 12th Ministerial Conference on 17 June 2022<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Aim<\/strong><\/td>\nTo protect marine life, restore fish stocks, and safeguard the livelihoods of communities<\/strong> dependent on fisheries.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Goals of the agreement\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Agreement will:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • prohibit harmful fisheries subsidies to protect peoples\u2019 livelihoods<\/strong> and promote food security<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • reinforce the multilateral trading system.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • take into account the needs of developing and least-developed country (LDC) members.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • support the sustainable future of our shared oceans<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Subsidies that are prohibited under the Agreement<\/strong><\/td>\n\n
    \n
  • Subsidies contributing to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Subsidies regarding overfished stocks <\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Subsidies for fishing or fishing-related activities<\/strong> in the unregulated high seas<\/li>\n
  • Members must take special care and exercise restraint when subsidizing vessels<\/strong> under other flags or activities involving fish stocks of unknown status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Oversight and Compliance<\/strong><\/td>\nA Committee on Fisheries Subsidies<\/strong> will be set up to:<\/p>\n

    • oversee the Agreement\u2019s implementation<\/li>\n
    • facilitate ongoing dialogue on members\u2019 fishing activities and subsidies<\/li>\n
    • enhance transparency regarding government practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

  • Protects Livelihoods<\/strong>: Safeguards small-scale fishers and coastal communities<\/strong> worldwide.<\/li>\n
  • Redirects Resources<\/strong>: Channels funds from harmful subsidies to sustainable fisheries management.<\/strong><\/li>\n
