{"id":34721,"date":"2018-10-31T13:02:40","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T07:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34721"},"modified":"2018-10-31T13:02:40","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T07:32:40","slug":"iisc-team-fabricates-nanomaterial-to-treat-parkinsons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/iisc-team-fabricates-nanomaterial-to-treat-parkinsons\/","title":{"rendered":"IISc team fabricates nanomaterial to treat Parkinson\u2019s:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-features\/tp-sci-tech-and-agri\/iisc-team-fabricates-nanomaterial-to-treat-parkinsons\/article19822049.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IISc team fabricates nanomaterial to treat Parkinson\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Indian Institute of Science <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(IISc) Bengaluru researchers have fabricated a <\/span><b>metal oxide nanomaterial<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Mn3O4) capable of mimicking all three major cellular antioxidant enzymes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will help in controlling the level of <\/span><b>Reactive Oxygen Species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ROS) inside cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What purpose will it serve?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nanomaterial appears a promising candidate for therapeutic applications against oxidative stress-induced neurological disorders, particularly <\/span><b>Parkinson\u2019s.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How is excess of ROS problematic?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROS such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical are essential for the normal functioning of cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess of ROS generated is usually controlled by the action of three antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When ROS gets generated in excess, it causes problems and the enzymes are unable to control the level of ROS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxidative stress due to excessive ROS causes damage to DNA, proteins and lipids; oxidative stress is implicated in several diseases such as neurodegeneration, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How does it function?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers tried numerous morphologies and found the flower-like morphology that had the best activity of all three enzymes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pores present on the nanomaterial play an important role as enzyme-active sites and help in scavenging excess ROS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The larger pore diameter and pore volume capable of accommodating all the three ROS were found to be critical in determining the enzyme activity of the nanomaterial.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was established that the nanomaterial caused no cellular toxicity when internalised by the cells and hence safe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nanomaterial was found to protect against neurotoxin-induced cell death by scavenging the excess ROS that was artificially generated inside the cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside the cells, the nanomaterial will substitute the cellular enzymes effectively when the enzymes are inhibited. Due to high pore size and volume, it was able to achieve better activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What will be the optimum effects?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manganese oxide nanomaterial was able to control the level of ROS inside the cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It just scavenges ROS and brings it to optimum level so normal functions of the cell are not affected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The superoxide dismutase enzyme has two forms and one functions in the cytosol and the other inside the mitochondria.
