As the saying goes, an educated girl becomes an educated mother, and that transforms society. In a country once marked by the bias of \u2018What will a girl do with education?\u2019, the last two decades have seen major progress.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Gujarat Model \u2013 The Beginning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The Kanya Kelavani campaign was launched in 2003<\/strong> to address female illiteracy and foeticide.<\/li>\n<li>The campaign combined awareness drives, separate toilets for girls, incentives, and public mobilisation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impact:<\/strong> The campaign successfully resulted in:\n<ol>\n<li>The <strong>increase in Female literacy in Gujarat <\/strong>by 70% (against the national average of 64%).<\/li>\n<li><strong>School dropout rates of girls reduced<\/strong> by up to 90% in targeted districts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>This model showed that education could be converted from a scheme into a <strong>public movement<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Nationwide Expansion \u2013 Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (2015)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Inspired by Gujarat\u2019s <strong>Kanya Kelavani campaign<\/strong> success, the <strong>BBBP initiative<\/strong> was launched with twin goals \u2014 <strong>prevention of female foeticide and promotion of girls\u2019 education<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>involved the convergence of three ministries:<\/strong> Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare, and Human Resource Development. Initially targeting 100 gender-critical districts, it later expanded nationwide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impact: <\/strong>The results were as follows:\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Sex ratio at birth improved <\/strong>from 919 (2015-16) to 929 (2019-21)<\/li>\n<li><strong>20 of 30 States\/UTs now perform above the national average.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s <strong>Total Fertility Rate dropped<\/strong> to 2.0, below replacement level, closely linked to rising female education.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Infant Mortality Rate for girls fell<\/strong> from 49 (2014) to 33 (2020).<\/li>\n<li>Surveys in Madhya Pradesh show <strong>89.5% awareness of BBBP<\/strong>, with <strong>63.2% families encouraged to educate daughters.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rising female presence<\/strong> in health, education, STEM, entrepreneurship, and even defence services.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Challenges <\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Low Labour Force Participation:<\/strong> Female labour force participation remains low despite significant improvements in female literacy levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regional Disparities:<\/strong> There are wide regional disparities in literacy rates and dropout levels among girls across different States and Union Territories.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uneven Quality of Education:<\/strong> The quality of education in many schools is uneven, leading to poor learning outcomes even where enrolment is high.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Persistent Social Norms:<\/strong> Deep-rooted practices such as early marriage and a continuing preference for sons still hinder girls\u2019 access to sustained education.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Expansion:<\/strong> School infrastructure must be strengthened by expanding safe school buildings, girls\u2019 hostels, and reliable transport facilities to reduce dropouts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Skill &amp; Digital Push:<\/strong> A strong emphasis should be placed on vocational training, digital literacy, and STEM education so that girls are equipped with future-ready skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial Incentives:<\/strong> Financial support in the form of targeted scholarships, incentives for higher education, skill training, and entrepreneurship opportunities must be expanded.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Participation:<\/strong> Community-based campaigns should be intensified to discourage early marriage, break stereotypes, and create a positive environment for girls\u2019 education.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Employment Linkage:<\/strong> Girls\u2019 education needs to be closely aligned with employability by connecting it with industry demands and job opportunities to increase female workforce participation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>From <em>Kanya Kelavani<\/em> to <em>BBBP<\/em>, India has shifted from asking <em>\u201cWhy educate girls?\u201d<\/em> to affirming <em>\u201cEducate a girl, save a society.\u201d <\/em>Leadership, policy convergence, and community mobilisation have driven this change. Sustaining momentum and addressing remaining gaps will ensure that today\u2019s educated daughters become tomorrow\u2019s empowered leaders and change-makers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: <\/strong>Girls\u2019 education is widely recognised as a catalyst for social and economic transformation.
