{"id":34738,"date":"2018-10-31T13:07:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T07:37:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34738"},"modified":"2018-10-31T13:07:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T07:37:10","slug":"hypertension-high-in-kerala-low-in-bihar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/hypertension-high-in-kerala-low-in-bihar\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Hypertension high in Kerala, low in Bihar\u2019:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/hypertension-high-in-kerala-low-in-bihar\/article19815790.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Hypertension high in Kerala, low in Bihar\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Diet and Nutritional Status of Urban Population in India and Prevalence of Obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes and Hyperlipidaemia in Urban Men and Women\u2019 carried out by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau during 2015-16, by researchers from the National Institute of Nutrition, has brought to the notice that prevalence rates for non-communicable diseases (NCD) as well as stunting, under-nutrition and obesity in children under 5 years in the 16 States surveyed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Reason for prevalence of Non Communicable Diseases NCD):<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increase in incidence of NCDs can be attributed to a<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Change in food habits,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased consumption of Alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased incidence of youth resorting to drugs, alcoholism,smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stressful lifestyle with long working hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower standards of food safety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing population and congestion on roads and public places.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sedentary behaviour and unhealthy lifestyles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gradation of environment, loss of biodiversity, <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High levels of pollution <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the findings of the Survey:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kerala has the highest prevalence of hypertension as well as high cholesterol in urban men and women.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puducherry tops the list of States with the highest prevalence of diabetes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highest prevalence of hypertension was found to be in Kerala (31.4% women and 38.6% men) and lowest in Bihar (22.2% men and 15.7% women).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puducherry had the highest number of diabetic men and women (42%), followed by Delhi (36%), Karnataka and Kerala (33% each).
