The initiative has expanded, with 22 Sahel governments now committed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>More than US$20 billion has been pledged.<\/li>\n<li>Major pledges include US$4 billion (<strong>Paris climate conference, 2015<\/strong>) and US$14.3 billion (<strong>One Planet Summit, 2021<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goal:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To combat <strong>desertification, restore degraded land and ecosystems<\/strong>, increase <strong>food security<\/strong>, create <strong>jobs<\/strong> linked to the environment, and <strong>absorb carbon<\/strong> that would otherwise enter the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Targets:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Restore <strong>100 million hectares by 2030<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Employ 10 million people<\/strong> in environment-related jobs.<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>8,000 km long and 8 km wide ecological wall<\/strong> envisioned to stretch across Africa from <strong>Senegal (West) to Djibouti (East)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Approached used: <\/strong>Uses an integrated <strong>landscape approach<\/strong> so each country addresses land degradation, climate adaptation and mitigation, biodiversity, forestry, and local livelihoods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accelerator for Delivery and Oversight (2021):<\/strong> The <strong>Great Green Wall Accelerator introduced in 2021<\/strong> strengthens monitoring, cooperation among stakeholders, and the tracking of funds to help the initiative move toward its 2030 goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>About India&#8217;s Aravalli Green Wall Project<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Goal<\/strong>: To <strong>restore the Aravalli mountain range<\/strong>, by creating a <strong>1,400 km long<\/strong> green belt to <strong>combat desertification<\/strong> spreading from the Thar Desert.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inspiration<\/strong>: Directly inspired <strong>by Africa&#8217;s Great Green Wall initiative.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scope<\/strong>: The project involves a <strong>5km-wide green buffe<\/strong>r around the Aravalli landscape across <strong>Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Delhi.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>Activities<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">: Afforestation, restoration of degraded land, water resource management, and biodiversity conservation, with a focus on community engagement and agroforestry.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The initiative is in the news due to funding\u2013implementation gaps, slow disbursements since 2021 pledges, and a renewed push through the Great Green Wall Accelerator.
