Initiatives taken for Indian Railways\u2019 green transition<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A) Infrastructure & operations initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Near-universal electrification:<\/strong> In the last decade, Indian Railways has electrified about 45,000 km<\/strong> of track, and over 98%<\/strong> of the broad-gauge network is now electrified, which sharply reduces diesel use and emissions.<\/li>\n
  2. Renewables on the system:<\/strong> The Railways has commissioned 756 MW<\/strong> of renewable capacity (553 MW solar, 103 MW wind, and 100 MW hybrid<\/strong>), and more than 2,000 stations and service buildings<\/strong> now operate on solar power.<\/li>\n
  3. Energy-efficient buildings:<\/strong> Several railway buildings, including in the Northeast Frontier zone<\/strong>, have earned the BEE \u201cShunya\u201d (net-zero)<\/strong> label, showing improved energy performance.<\/li>\n

IRFC\u2019s green financing role:<\/strong> The Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC)<\/strong> began with a $500 million green bond in 2017<\/strong> to refinance the procurement of electric locomotives<\/strong>, and most recently it extended a <\/strong>\u20b97,500 crore loan to NTPC Green Energy<\/strong> to develop additional renewable power capacity, demonstrating cross-sector low-carbon financing.<\/li>\n
