the world is <strong>63% off track<\/strong> to halt deforestation by 2030.<\/li>\n<li>Tropical forests were worst hit, with <strong>6.73 million hectares<\/strong> lost in 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Degradation and restoration<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Forest degradation affected <strong>8.8 million hectares<\/strong> in 2024.<\/li>\n<li>Restoration projects cover <strong>10.6 million hectares<\/strong> (about <strong>5.4%<\/strong> of global reforestation potential and <strong>0.3%<\/strong> of global biophysical forest restoration potential); data remain fragmented.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finance action<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>International public finance for forests has increased to about <strong>$5.7\u2013$5.9 billion per year<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>To meet the <strong>2030 goals,<\/strong> the report estimates that the <strong>world needs between $117 billion and $299 billion in financing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drivers of forest loss:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Permanent agriculture<\/strong>: It accounts for about <strong>86%<\/strong> of global deforestation over the last decade.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fire<\/strong>: It is a major cause of loss in 2024 (linked to <strong>land clearing<\/strong>, <strong>climate-change-induced drought<\/strong>, and <strong>limited law enforcement<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commodity demand<\/strong>: Rising demand for <strong>soy, beef, timber, coal, and metals<\/strong> drives clearance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mining expansion<\/strong>: <strong>Gold and coal mining<\/strong> are growing sources of deforestation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Logging and monocrops<\/strong>: Expansion supported by subsidies contributes to forest clearance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Misaligned incentives<\/strong>: Large <strong>agricultural subsidies<\/strong> (~$409 billion annually) outweigh limited forest finance (~$5.7\u2013$5.9 billion), encouraging deforestation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weak enforcement<\/strong>: Limited law enforcement enables illegal burning and clearing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limited rights and participation<\/strong>: Restricted roles for <strong>Indigenous Peoples, local communities, women, and civil society<\/strong> undermine conservation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Industry dominance<\/strong>: Political and economic power of industry in many countries leads to policies that allow deforestation and degradation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The 2025 Forest Declaration Assessment warns 2024 losses keep the world far off halting deforestation and restoring ecosystems by 2030.
