It is also known as <strong>yuca, mandioca, manioc, or tapioca.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conditions required:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Soil: Well drained soil preferably red lateritic loam<\/strong> with a pH range of 5.5 -7.0 is best suited for tapioca cultivation.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Climate:<\/strong> It thrives best in<strong> tropical, warm humid climate with well distributed rainfall<\/strong> of over 100 cm per annum.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Elevation: <\/strong>This crop can be <strong>cultivated upto an elevation of 1000 m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Season and planting: <\/strong>Planting can be done throughout the year under irrigated condition. For rainfed cultivation, planting can be taken up during April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Introduction into India:<\/strong> It was <strong>brought to India by the Portuguese in the 17th century<\/strong> in the <strong>Malabar region<\/strong> of present-day Kerala.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Production in India:<\/strong> In India, cassava is<strong> grown on about 1.73\u20132.28 lakh hectares, primarily in Tamil Nadu and Kerala,<\/strong> which together <strong>account for more than 90 percent of national output<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>It is also cultivated in <strong>Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Assam, etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India has historically achieved <strong>high yield levels of about 35 tonnes per hectare,<\/strong> significantly above the <strong>global average of 10.76 tonnes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Export from India:<\/strong> India exports cassava and its products such as <strong>raw tubers, flour, meal of sago, starch of manioc and sago and tapioca <\/strong>and its substitutes to countries like<strong> U.A.E., Saudi Arabia, Oman, European nations, Kuwait and the United States of America.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India exports <strong>value-added tapioca products<\/strong> worth nearly \u20b9200 million annually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>Global Producer and Exporter:<\/strong> <strong>Nigeria<\/strong> is the <strong>world\u2019s biggest and most consistent cassava producer<\/strong> worldwide.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">However, <strong>Thailand<\/strong>\u00a0is the<strong> world\u2019s largest supplier of cassava,<\/strong> as it is currently responsible for <strong>roughly 70 percent of total world exports.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: South India\u2019s tapioca (cassava) crop has recovered from a severe infestation of cassava mealybug following the successful release of a biological control agent, the parasitic wasp Anagyrus lopezi, by ICAR\u2013NBAIR.
