The recent ASEAN Summit in Malaysia should have been an important opportunity for India to strengthen its regional engagement.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Significance of ASEAN for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>ASEAN <strong>plays a central role in India\u2019s Act East Policy<\/strong> and its wider Indo-Pacific strategy.<\/li>\n<li>The ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN\u2013India Summit, and the East Asia Summit allow<strong> India to interact with major powers<\/strong> including U.S.A, China, Japan, Australia, Russia, and South Korea.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooperation with ASEAN supports India\u2019s priorities in maritime security, <\/strong>disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, supply chain resilience, and the blue economy.<\/li>\n<li>The summit setting <strong>provides momentum for advancing trade reforms <\/strong>such as the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>India\u2019s Position at the 2025 Summit<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India was<strong> represented by the External Affairs Minister<\/strong> at a time of global economic volatility, strategic competition, and maritime tensions in the Indo-Pacific.<\/li>\n<li>India <strong>highlighted concerns over tariff barriers, reliable access <\/strong>to critical exports, and supply-chain security.<\/li>\n<li>India and ASEAN <strong>reaffirmed their commitment to finalise AITIGA reforms,<\/strong> which are essential for balanced and sustainable trade relations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Challenges in India\u2013ASEAN Engagement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India c<strong>ontinues to face strong strategic and economic competition <\/strong>from China in the ASEAN region.<\/li>\n<li>T<strong>rade imbalances and delays in connectivity projects<\/strong> have limited the full potential of economic cooperation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diplomatic sensitivities,<\/strong> including past tensions with Malaysia over Pakistan, have <strong>occasionally strained relations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>absence of India\u2019s top leadership at key ASEAN engagements contributes to a perception of inconsistency<\/strong> in India\u2019s regional commitment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Why It Was a Missed Opportunity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>The <strong>absence of the Prime Minister diminished India\u2019s visibility<\/strong> and <strong>diplomatic signalling<\/strong> at a critical geopolitical moment.<\/li>\n<li>ASEAN leaders were not <strong>fully persuaded by the official explanation, <\/strong>especially because India\u2019s absence had also occurred in 2022.<\/li>\n<li>India<strong> lost a valuable opportunity to demonstrate leadership when other major powers reaffirmed their commitment <\/strong>simply through their presence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Implications<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India\u2019s <strong>absence may undermine trust and reduce confidence among ASEAN partners<\/strong> regarding India\u2019s long-term engagement.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>may create strategic openings for other powers,<\/strong> particularly China, to expand influence in Southeast Asia.<\/li>\n<li>Slower progress in ongoing negotiations and reduced diplomatic momentum<strong> may weaken India\u2019s role in shaping Indo-Pacific architecture.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India <strong>must ensure consistent high-level representation at ASEAN<\/strong> and East Asia Summits to reinforce its commitment to the region.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthening connectivity and economic integration<\/strong> <strong>measures<\/strong>, including faster AITIGA reforms, will be essential to improve trade relations.<\/li>\n<li>India should <strong>expand maritime cooperation, digital connectivity, and defence partnership<\/strong>s to counterbalance strategic competition.<\/li>\n<li>Diplomatic <strong>outreach must be proactive<\/strong> to prevent any misperceptions regarding India\u2019s priorities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong> ASEAN remains vital for India\u2019s strategic interests and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
