{"id":34904,"date":"2018-10-31T14:20:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T08:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34904"},"modified":"2018-10-31T14:20:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T08:50:50","slug":"of-paramount-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/of-paramount-interest\/","title":{"rendered":"Of paramount interest?:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/of-paramount-interest\/article19759607.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of paramount interest?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN General Assembly has confirmed the growing ineffectiveness of the world body.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Introduction:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 1945, India\u2019s princely states sent a single representative to sign the Charter of the United Nations at the San Francisco conference.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>A word war<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religion became cause to divide rather than build a common understanding, and the dignity of the United Nations, disappeared as each side used its multiple rights of reply for name-calling and rhetoric hurled at the other.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The India-Pakistan word war was outdone by the U.S. and North Korea who sparred over Pyongyang\u2019s latest provocations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Secretary General\u2019s list:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres in his UN\u2019s 72<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> General Assembly listed the world\u2019s seven biggest threats: nuclear peril, terrorism, unresolved conflict and violations of international humanitarian law, climate change, growing inequality, cyber warfare and misuse of artificial intelligence, and human mobility, or refugees.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN\u2019s actions in response to North Korea\u2019s missiles and nuclear tests amounted to another round of sanctions against the Kim Jong-un regime.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1966, the UN Security Council has established 26 sanctions regimes, of which about half are still active. In some cases, the sanctions only squeezed the country\u2019s poor, as in Zimbabwe (Southern Rhodesia ) and DPRK itself, while not changing its belligerent positions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, the misery was heightened by international military interventions, from Yugoslavia to Libya and Yemen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, against which the U.S. and Russia united to pass a slew of economic, political and travel sanctions in the 1990s, didn\u2019t change course on its support to al-Qaeda or its brutal treatment of women and minorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Lacking guarantees<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UN has done itself no favours by failing to censure NATO on violating its mandate only to the responsibility to protect (R2P) and not for regime change in Libya in 2011.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To other countries that may enter talks, as Iran did, the imminent threat from the U.S. of walking out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (P5+1 agreement) would make them question the efficacy of the UN in guaranteeing any deal struck.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other decisions of the Trump administration in the U.S., to walk out of the climate change agreement as well as threaten to cancel its funding contributions to the UN, have also seen little comment from the world body, which further reduces the respect it is viewed with.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s struggles to convince China to allow the Security Council to sanction Masood Azhar, whose release in exchange for hostages in 1999 should \u00a0\u00a0have been proof enough of his perfidy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Russia and the U.S. have been known to use cyber warfare, but equally the use of new-age warfare-drones, robotic soldiers and remote killings must see more regulations from the international community.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Each one \u2018first\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solving the world\u2019s inequalities, the last point on his list, where Mr. Guterres pointed out that \u201ceight men represent as much of the world\u2019s wealth as half of all humanity\u201d, will be a harder and harder task for the UN, where member countries speak only of putting themselves \u201cfirst\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of paramount interest?:\u00a0 Context: The UN General Assembly has confirmed the growing ineffectiveness of the world body.
