When tiny salt powder particles are introduced, they immediately start attracting water molecules, forming large water droplets very quickly. These large droplets then collide with smaller ones, growing rapidly until they fall as rain.<\/li>\n<li><b>Delivery:<\/b><span class=\"citation-89 citation-end-89\"> Usually dispersed from aircraft flying directly into the base of the clouds.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a id=\"h3\"><\/a>Effectiveness of Cloud Seeding:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><b class=\"\">Precipitation Augmentation:<\/b><span class=\"\"> When suitable clouds are present,<\/span><span class=\"\"> seeding can typically increase rainfall or snowfall by <\/span><b class=\"\"><span class=\"math-inline\" data-math=\"10\\%\">10%<\/span> to <span class=\"math-inline\" data-math=\"15\\%\">15%<\/span><\/b><span class=\"\">\u00a0in the targeted area.<\/span><span class=\"\"> In some specific,<\/span><span class=\"\"> ideal scenarios,<\/span><span class=\"\"> increases have been reported to be as high as <\/span><span class=\"math-inline\" data-math=\"20\\%\">20%<\/span><span class=\"\"> to <\/span><span class=\"math-inline\" data-math=\"30\\%\">30%<\/span><span class=\"\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b class=\"\">Snowpack Enhancement:<\/b><span class=\"\"> It is highly effective in increasing mountain snowpack,<\/span><span class=\"\"> which acts as a natural water reservoir.<\/span><span class=\"\"> This is critical for hydropower generation and downstream irrigation in the spring.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Regions like the Rocky Mountains in the US and mountainous regions in Australia have used this successfully for decades.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b class=\"\">Hail Suppression:<\/b><span class=\"\"> By introducing numerous condensation nuclei,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the process can cause the water droplets to freeze into many small ice particles rather than a few large ones.<\/span><span class=\"\"> These small particles melt before hitting the ground,<\/span><span class=\"\"> thus reducing the size and damage potential of hail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b class=\"\">Fog Dispersal:<\/b><span class=\"\"> In cold conditions,<\/span><span class=\"\"> seeding can clear supercooled fog at airports,<\/span><span class=\"\"> improving visibility and flight safety.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a id=\"h4\"><\/a>Challenges related to Cloud Seeding:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><b><span class=\"citation-121\">Requires Clouds, Not Creation:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-121 citation-end-121\"> Cloud seeding cannot create clouds from clear skies.<\/span> It is <span class=\"math-inline\" data-math=\"100\\%\">100%<\/span>\u00a0dependent on the presence of <b>existing clouds<\/b> that contain enough liquid water and are at the right temperature (often supercooled water). If the atmosphere is too dry or stable, seeding has no effect.<\/li>\n<li><b>Atmospheric &#8220;Thirst&#8221;:<\/b> Even if rain is generated, if the air mass below the cloud is very dry, the falling precipitation may evaporate before reaching the ground\u2014a phenomenon known as <b>virga.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b><span class=\"citation-119\">High Cost:<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-119 citation-end-119\"> Running a sustained cloud seeding program is expensive.<\/span> <span class=\"citation-118 citation-end-118\">It requires specialized aircraft, ground stations, radar monitoring, and a team of meteorologists and pilots.<\/span> This makes it an impractical or non-sustainable solution for long-term water management.<\/li>\n<li><b>The &#8220;Rain Stealing&#8221; Controversy:<\/b> This is the most significant political challenge. The d<span class=\"citation-117 citation-end-117\">ownwind regions often accuse seeded areas of &#8220;stealing&#8221; their water, claiming that forcing clouds to precipitate early depletes the moisture that would have naturally fallen elsewhere.<\/span> While evidence for this is inconclusive, the perception creates interstate or international political friction.<\/li>\n<li><b>Chemical Dispersion (Minimal Risk):<\/b> While Silver Iodide is the most common agent, some public concern remains about dispersing chemicals into the environment. <span class=\"citation-116\">However, the amounts are minute (parts per trillion), and scientific studies have generally concluded that <\/span><b><span class=\"citation-116\">silver iodide is not environmentally hazardous<\/span><\/b><span class=\"citation-116 citation-end-116\"> at the concentration levels used in cloud seeding.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a id=\"h5\"><\/a>Reasons for underperformance of cloud seeding in Delhi:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Insufficient Cloud Moisture: <\/strong>Successful cloud seeding requires clouds with high moisture content (usually above 50%) to allow chemical nuclei to facilitate droplet formation. During Delhi\u2019s trials, moisture levels were only about 15-20%, too low for effective rainfall induction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unfavourable Weather Conditions:<\/strong> Cloud seeding is highly dependent on specific meteorological conditions, which were not met during the trial periods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expectations v\/s Reality:<\/strong> Cloud seeding is not guaranteed to produce rain\u2014its success rate is variable, and it is better seen as a supplementary, emergency intervention, not a primary solution.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion:\u00a0<\/strong>Cloud seeding is a promising tool for weather modification, drought management, and air quality control, but its success depends on cloud properties, timing, and atmospheric conditions.
