Uttarakhand Govt.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>multiform cultural event<\/strong> that <strong>reflects the community<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s environmental, spiritual, and cultural concepts <\/strong>and recounts its founding myths.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location associated with:<\/strong> Twin villages of<strong> Saloor-Dungra in Uttarakhand<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Chamoli<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>strengthens community self-worth<\/strong> by <strong>combining theatre, music, historical reconstructions<\/strong>, and traditional oral and written tales.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time:<\/strong> Celebrated annually in<strong> late April during Baisakhi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dedicated to:<\/strong> It is dedicated to the <strong>tutelary god Bhumiyal Devta<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Festival premises<\/strong>: Most festivities <strong>occur at the temple of Bhumiyal Devta.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>UNESCO Recognition:<\/strong> Inscribed in <strong>2009 on UNESCO<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Intangible Cultural Heritage list<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ritual Theatre:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The festival stages the <strong>Ramayana and local legends as full theatrical performances. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Performers wear <strong>18 distinct masks<\/strong> made from <strong>Bhojpatra (Himalayan birch).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>masks<\/strong> are <strong>accompanied<\/strong> by make-up using sheep\u2019s wool, honey, vermilion, wheat flour, oil, turmeric, soot and locally grown plants and vegetables.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dances:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The sequence begins with an <strong>invocation to god <\/strong><strong>Ganesha. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It includes the <strong>Sun God dance<\/strong> and an enactment of the myth of the <strong>birth of Brahma and Ganesha. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Other dances feature <strong>Bur Deva alongside Krishna and Radhika.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The dance sets <strong>depict local livelihoods and hardships<\/strong>, for example <strong>Mwar-Mwarin shows<\/strong> buffalo herders facing a tiger attack, while <strong>Baniya-Baniyain portrays<\/strong> a trader couple being robbed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Musicals:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>local Ramkatha is sung<\/strong> in carefully measured rhythm, <strong>covering a total of 324 beats and steps. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The<strong> Jagar tradition<\/strong> is also performed as part of the musical narration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Storytelling:<\/strong> The festival uses historical reconstructions and both oral and written tales to present founding myths and everyday community life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Caste-based Roles:<\/strong> Different castes have specific, hereditary roles in the festival, reflecting a strong community structure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: President Droupadi Murmu received a Ramman mask at a special Uttarakhand Assembly session, spotlighting this centuries-old Garhwal festival.
