{"id":349526,"date":"2025-11-08T15:47:50","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T10:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=349526"},"modified":"2025-11-08T16:01:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T10:31:30","slug":"changthang-cold-desert-wildlife-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/changthang-cold-desert-wildlife-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News: <\/strong>The standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) has recommended approval for 12 key defence projects in Ladakh across Changthang Cold Desert Sanctuary and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>About Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 496px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media2.thrillophilia.com\/images\/photos\/000\/124\/519\/original\/1514531567_pangong_lake.jpg?resize=496%2C297&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary\" width=\"496\" height=\"297\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Thrillophilia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location: <\/strong>It is located at the <strong>Ladakhi Changthang plateau<\/strong> in the<span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong> Leh district of Ladakh.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Established: <\/strong>1987<\/li>\n<li><strong>Area:<\/strong> It covers an area of almost<strong> 1,600 sq. km.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is home to the <strong>highest altitude water lakes,<\/strong> namely, <strong>Tso Moriri (which also happens to be the highest lake on earth), Pangong Tso and Tso Kar and Korzok village <\/strong>(considered to be the <strong>world\u2019s highest village<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>The indigenous <strong>Changpa nomadic tribe<\/strong> coexists with the region\u2019s fragile ecosystem for centuries<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong> It is home to large carnivores such as the <strong>Snow leopard, Himalayan grey wolf and Lynx<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The region also <strong>supports six species of wild ungulates:<\/strong> Blue sheep, Tibetan argali, Kiang, Tibetan gazelle, Tibetan antelope, and Wild yak.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, species such as the<strong> Himalayan marmot, woolly hare, Tibetan snowcock, and Chukar<\/strong> thrive in the region.<\/li>\n<li>It also serves as the <strong>only known breeding site<\/strong> in India for the<strong> Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) and Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Around <strong>44 types of water birds and seasonal species of migratory birds<\/strong> such as the black-necked crane, bar-headed goose, Brahminy duck, Lammergeier, and brown-headed gulls are found here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora:<\/strong> It is home to almost<strong> 200 species of wild plants<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Cold-resistant grasses like <strong>Stipa and Kobresia along with cushion herbs<\/strong> like thyme grow in the arid habitat of the Changthang plateau.<\/li>\n<li>The<strong> sparse vegetation covers less than 10% of the rolling steppes<\/strong> and\u00a0mountain\u00a0slopes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (SC-NBWL) has recommended approval for 12 key defence projects in Ladakh across Changthang Cold Desert Sanctuary and Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary.
