{"id":349740,"date":"2025-11-12T15:24:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T09:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=349740"},"modified":"2025-11-12T16:13:28","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T10:43:28","slug":"rift-valley-fever-rvf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rift-valley-fever-rvf\/","title":{"rendered":"Rift Valley Fever (RVF)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News<\/strong>: Recently, WHO confirmed an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) affecting Mauritania and Senegal, resulting in over 404 human cases and 42 deaths.<\/p>\n<h2>About Rift Valley Fever (RVF)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_349741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-349741\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-349741\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-Jenner-Institute.jpg?resize=370%2C254&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Rift Valley Fever (RVF)\" width=\"370\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-Jenner-Institute.jpg?resize=300%2C206&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-Jenner-Institute.jpg?resize=1024%2C702&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-Jenner-Institute.jpg?resize=768%2C526&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-Jenner-Institute.jpg?w=1062&amp;ssl=1 1062w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-349741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; Jenner Institute<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>RVF is a <strong>viral zoonotic disease <\/strong>that affects both<strong> animals and humans.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Caused by :<\/strong> The disease is caused <strong>by a Phlebovirus <\/strong>belonging to the <strong>Phenuiviridae<\/strong> family.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>primarily infects animals <\/strong>such as sheep, goats, cattle, and camels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transmission<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Humans become infected through <strong>bites of infected mosquitoes or contact with blood, organs, or raw milk from infected animals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There is<strong> no <\/strong>evidence of<strong> human-to-human <\/strong>transmission<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Incubation period<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>It is usually begin <strong>2\u20136 days after exposure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>About 90% develop a mild, flu-like illness <\/strong>with <strong>high fever, headache, weakness, backache, and muscle and joint pain<\/strong>, sometimes with nausea, vomiting, and light sensitivity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Severe disease is uncommon but includes<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ocular disease <\/strong>(0.5\u20132%) causing blurred vision, floaters, eye pain, and possible permanent loss;<\/li>\n<li><strong>M<\/strong><strong>eningoencephalitis<\/strong> (&lt;1%) with confusion, dizziness, seizures, or coma; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>A haemorrhagic form<\/strong> (&lt;1%) with jaundice, bleeding, and liver failure, carrying ~50% fatality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diagnosis<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Diagnosing <strong>RVF is challenging<\/strong> because it <strong>mimics malaria, typhoid, and other febrile illnesses<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Confirmation requires laboratory testing using <strong>molecular or serological methods <\/strong>under high biosafety precautions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No specific antiviral treatment<\/strong> or licensed human vaccine is available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Animal vaccination <\/strong>is<strong> useful between outbreaks <\/strong>but not during them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Global classification<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is recognized by the <strong>World Organization for Animal Health<\/strong> as a <strong>notifiable animal disease.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It listed by <strong>WHO<\/strong> as a priority pathogen with <strong>epidemic potential.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indian perspective<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India has <strong>not reported any Rift Valley Fever outbreak till date.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is classified as an <strong>exotic zoonosis under India<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s One Health surveillance framework.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Recently, WHO confirmed an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) affecting Mauritania and Senegal, resulting in over 404 human cases and 42 deaths.
