{"id":34977,"date":"2018-10-31T14:39:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34977"},"modified":"2018-10-31T14:39:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:09:12","slug":"tech-boost-for-soil-quality-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/tech-boost-for-soil-quality-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech boost for soil quality scheme:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/tech-boost-for-soil-quality-scheme\/article19749552.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech boost for soil quality scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is looking to link the programme with a research project at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay that uses sophisticated imaging techniques and can picture the nutrient balance of a patch of land without necessarily collecting soil sample.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Technology used<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Hyper spectral imaging <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means analysing extremely detailed images of an object \u00a0to the scale of nanometres and then reconstructing its constituent elements. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using custom-developed algorithms, satellite-images, or those taken from low flying planes or drones, can be used to calculate the proportion of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous, the three most vital nutrients as well as other minerals in the soil and be used to gauge its health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Hurdle<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently no Indian satellite has the capability to take nano-scale resolution pictures,<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Way forward<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DST should talks with the Ministry of Agriculture and State departments to evolve a programme and apply this technology for the government\u2019s mission.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More State officials come on board to discuss its application.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State and centre should collaborate with ISRO to built such satellite.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tech boost for soil quality scheme: Context: The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is looking to link the programme with a research project at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay that uses sophisticated imaging techniques and can picture the nutrient balance of a patch of land without necessarily collecting soil sample.
