{"id":35000,"date":"2018-10-31T14:43:10","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35000"},"modified":"2018-10-31T14:43:10","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:13:10","slug":"it-is-for-states-to-crack-down-on-cow-vigilantes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/it-is-for-states-to-crack-down-on-cow-vigilantes\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It is for States to crack down on cow vigilantes\u2019:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/it-is-for-the-states-to-crack-down-on-cow-vigilantes-says-supreme-court\/article19739535.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018It is for States to crack down on cow vigilantes\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Overview<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State governments have a responsibility to crack down on cow vigilante groups and prepare a counter-mechanism to act against and prosecute cow vigilantes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What has happened? <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Supreme Court Bench (led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra) has ordered the Chief Secretaries of 22 States to file their compliance reports on steps taken. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The steps include: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appointment of dedicated nodal police officers in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing cow vigilantes, or \u2018gau rakshaks\u2019. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To restrict\/stop \u201ctaking the law or becoming a law unto themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme Court<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had earlier<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ordered the States and the Union Territories to appoint nodal police officers in every district to crack down on cow vigilantes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Filing of reports by States : Status <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Gujarat have filed their compliance affidavits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All compliance reports need to reach the court before the next hearing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The court had earlier given the 29 States and seven Union Territories time to put in place a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">counter-mechanism to act against and prosecute cow vigilantes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The compliance reports need to be filled by all the states.
