UN News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Food Waste Breakthrough was launched on <strong data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"234\">13 November 2025<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"238\" data-end=\"256\">COP30 in Bel\u00e9m.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"238\" data-end=\"256\">Launched by:<\/strong> <strong>UNEP<\/strong> and its partners<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim: To halve global food waste by 2030 and reduce methane emissions by up to 7%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It also focuses on significantly <strong>lowering global temperatures, improving food security, and reducing\u00a0methane emissions<\/strong> by keeping food out of landfills.<\/li>\n<li>It is designated as a <strong data-start=\"418\" data-end=\"443\">2030 Climate Solution<\/strong> under the <strong>Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Core Structure of the Initiative: <\/strong>The Food Waste Breakthrough is built on <strong>three main pillars,<\/strong> which are &#8211;\n<ul>\n<li>Capacity Building &amp; Advocacy<\/li>\n<li>Data &amp; Policy<\/li>\n<li>Finance &amp; Implementation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"2520\" data-end=\"2560\">Participation: <\/strong><strong data-start=\"2589\" data-end=\"2599\">Brazil<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2601\" data-end=\"2610\">Japan<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2638\">United Kingdom<\/strong> are serving as country champions for the initiative.\n<ul>\n<li><strong data-start=\"2696\" data-end=\"2731\">City and Sub-National Champions: <\/strong>Participating cities and regions include: <strong data-start=\"2776\" data-end=\"2785\">Amman<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2787\" data-end=\"2798\">Bangkok<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2800\" data-end=\"2814\">California<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"2828\">Curitiba<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2830\" data-end=\"2847\">Dar es Salaam<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"2866\">Florian\u00f3polis<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2868\" data-end=\"2882\">Hanam City<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2884\" data-end=\"2894\">Kisumu<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2896\" data-end=\"2911\">Mexico City<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2913\" data-end=\"2922\">Milan<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"2933\">Paris<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2939\" data-end=\"2957\">Rio de Janeiro<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"2963\" data-end=\"2994\">Private-Sector Contributors: <\/strong>Key private-sector actors supporting the initiative include <strong data-start=\"3057\" data-end=\"3070\">Carrefour<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3072\" data-end=\"3084\">Citibank<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3086\" data-end=\"3096\">Google<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3098\" data-end=\"3108\">Hilton<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3110\" data-end=\"3122\">Rabobank<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"3128\" data-end=\"3138\">Winnow<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong data-start=\"1882\" data-end=\"1908\">Funding Commitments: <\/strong>The Global Environment Facility has committed <strong data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1973\">US$3 million<\/strong> to support a <strong data-start=\"1987\" data-end=\"2015\">four-year global project<\/strong> that will implement the initiative\u2019s targets.\n<ul>\n<li>This project will focus on accelerating <strong data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2131\">food waste prevention<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2136\" data-end=\"2158\">methane mitigation<\/strong>, while scaling proven solutions at national and sub-national levels in developing countries.<\/li>\n<li>UNEP is collaborating with financial institutions and foundations to secure an additional <strong data-start=\"2346\" data-end=\"2377\">US$5 million challenge fund<\/strong> to support <strong data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2424\">20\u201325 community-led innovations<\/strong> in regions including Latin America &amp;
