  • Sericulture in UP has roots in traditional practices<\/strong> among rural communities<\/strong>, especially in eastern and terai regions.<\/li>\n
  • Primarily tasar (tussar)<\/strong> and eri varieties<\/strong> were produced at small scale. Mulberry cultivation was limited due to climate constraints and lack of organized support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Post-Independence (1950s\u20131970s): Foundation Phase<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • After 1947, the Government of India promoted sericulture<\/strong> as a rural employment<\/strong> and cottage industry<\/strong>. UP began setting up sericulture farms<\/strong>, nurseries<\/strong>, and training centers<\/strong> under the state\u2019s Department of Sericulture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Mulberry cultivation expanded<\/strong> due to improved mulberry varieties and bivoltine silkworms in districts such as Saharanpur<\/strong>, Bijnor<\/strong>, Moradabad<\/strong>, Meerut<\/strong>, and Bareilly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Structured Development and Expansion (1980s- 2010s)<\/strong><\/td>\n\n

  • UP joined the Central Silk Board<\/strong> (CSB)<\/strong> programmes<\/strong>. Chawki rearing centers (CRCs)<\/strong>, Silk seed production units<\/strong>, and Technical training institutes<\/strong> were established.<\/li>\n
  • Technological adoption and interventions through improved rearing houses<\/strong>, better silkworm breeds<\/strong>, and disease management practices,\u00a0<\/strong>led to the development of reeling and weaving clusters in Varanasi<\/strong> (Banarasi silk), Azamgarh<\/strong>, Meerut<\/strong> and Gorakhpur (eri and mulberry).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Modernization and Expansion (2010 onwards)<\/strong><\/td>\nUP announced multiple state-level sericulture missions<\/strong>. Key initiatives included promotion of bivoltine silk<\/strong> to improve quality, and expansion of mulberry plantations<\/strong> in non-traditional areas using irrigation and drought-tolerant mulberry varieties.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Eri silk development scheme<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is being implemented in 8 districts of the state, including Fatehpur, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur, Banda, Chitrakoot, Jalaun. There are a total of 5 government-owned Eri (Castor) silk farms in the state.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

<\/a>What is the significance of sericulture in UP?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

1. Rural Employment Generation-<\/strong> Sericulture is a labour-intensive activity<\/strong>, as it provides year-round employment to rural households. It helps in reducing seasonal unemployment<\/strong> among small and marginal farmers, landless labourers, and women.<\/p>\n

2. Women empowerment-<\/strong> Cocoon rearing, silk reeling, and weaving are activities commonly taken up by women<\/strong> and self-help groups (SHGs)<\/strong>. It provides home-based income<\/strong> and improves socio-economic status of women<\/strong> in rural and semi-urban areas.<\/p>\n

3. Boost to Traditional Silk Weaving Clusters-<\/strong> UP is home to world-famous silk weaving centres like Varanasi<\/strong>, Mubarakpur<\/strong>, and Meerut<\/strong>. Development of local sericulture ensures better supply of quality raw silk and reduces the dependence on imported silk (especially chinese silk).<\/p>\n

4. Tribal and Backward Region Development-<\/strong> Tasar sericulture is practiced in Sonbhadra<\/strong>, Mirzapur<\/strong>, and Chandauli<\/strong>, regions with significant tribal populations.<\/p>\n

5. Agricultural Diversification-<\/strong> Mulberry cultivation provides an alternative<\/strong> to traditional crops<\/strong> like wheat<\/strong> and paddy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

6. Environmental Benefits-<\/strong> Mulberry plantations help in soil conservation<\/strong>, carbon sequestration<\/strong> and prevention of land degradation<\/strong>. Sericulture is an eco-friendly<\/strong>, low-pollution industry<\/strong>, aligning with sustainability goals.<\/p>\n

<\/a>What are the challenges with the development of sericulture in UP?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. Climatic Limitations-<\/strong> UP\u2019s climate is not uniformly suitable for mulberry cultivation<\/strong>. Extreme summers<\/strong> and cold winters<\/strong> affect silkworm growth and cocoon quality.<\/p>\n

2. Limited Quality Mulberry Cultivation-<\/strong> Mulberry acreage in UP is much lower than in southern states like Karnataka. Major issues with mulberry cultivation are poor-quality soils in many regions, limited irrigation facilities and low availability of high-yielding mulberry varieties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. Shortage of Quality Silkworm Seed-<\/strong> UP has inadequate number<\/strong> of advanced seed production units<\/strong> and chawki rearing centers<\/strong>. UP is dependent on other states for disease-free layings (DFLs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4. Fragmented and unorganised producer base-<\/strong> Sericulture in UP is dominated by small and marginal farmers. Lack of cooperative structures results in weak market linkages, and low bargaining power.<\/p>\n

5. Skill Gaps and Low Awareness-<\/strong> Sericulture requires specialized skills in Silkworm rearing, Cocoon handling, reeling, spinning, and twisting. Skill development programmes are insufficient in many districts of UP.<\/p>\n

6. Marketing and Price Instability-<\/strong> Price fluctuations in cocoons and raw silk discourage farmers. There is lack of assured buy-back mechanisms, organised auction centres and transparent pricing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>What should be the way forward?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. Expand Mulberry Cultivation-<\/strong> Promote high-yielding and climate-resilient mulberry varieties suitable for UP\u2019s climatic conditions. Encourage intercropping<\/strong> and boundary plantations<\/strong> to help small farmers adopt mulberry without losing main crop income.<\/p>\n

2. Strengthen Seed and Silkworm Rearing Infrastructure-<\/strong> Establish more chawki rearing centres (CRCs)<\/strong> and disease-free laying (DFL) production units<\/strong> in each major sericulture district.<\/p>\n

3. Technology Upgradation-<\/strong> Introduce modern rearing houses, humidity or temperature control devices, improved mountages. Provide financial aid<\/strong> for upgrading old looms<\/strong> to semi-automatic and powerlooms<\/strong>, especially in Varanasi<\/strong> and Mubarakpur.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4. Skill Development and Capacity Building-<\/strong> Strengthen training through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Central Silk Board (CSB) centres, and Rural Livelihood Missions. Introduce sericulture skill modules under UP Skill Development Mission<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Enhance Market Linkages-<\/strong> Develop organized cocoon markets<\/strong> with transparent auction systems. Set up farmer\u2013weaver clusters<\/strong> to ensure assured procurement of cocoons.<\/p>\n

6. Reduce Dependence on Imported Silk-<\/strong> Promote bivoltine sericulture<\/strong> (high-quality mulberry silk<\/strong>) to supply weaving clusters. Set up testing and quality certification labs<\/strong> to boost confidence of local weavers in UP silk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
