{"id":350436,"date":"2025-11-21T18:08:54","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T12:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=350436"},"modified":"2025-11-21T18:08:54","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T12:38:54","slug":"world-urbanisation-prospects-2025-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/world-urbanisation-prospects-2025-report\/","title":{"rendered":"World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News<\/strong>: Recently UN DESA released the new World Urbanization Prospects 2025 report using the Degree of Urbanization methodology.<\/p>\n<h2>About\u00a0 World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 Report<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_350437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-350437\" style=\"width: 362px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-350437\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-UN-2.jpg?resize=362%2C204&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"World Urbanisation Prospects 2025 Report\" width=\"362\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-UN-2.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-UN-2.jpg?w=710&amp;ssl=1 710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-350437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; UN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It gives <strong>population estimates and projections<\/strong> using the <strong>Degree of Urbanization.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Prepared by:<\/strong> It is prepared by the <strong>Population Division<\/strong> of the <strong>United<\/strong> <strong>Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Global findings<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Urban growth pattern:<\/strong> In 2025, cities house 45 per cent of world\u2019s population, towns 36 per cent and rural areas 19 per cent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rising megacities:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>number of megacities<\/strong> (over 10 million people) <strong>increased<\/strong> from 8 in 1975 to <strong>33 in 2025<\/strong>, with <strong>19 located in Asia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jakarta<\/strong> (Indonesia) is the <strong>most populous city,<\/strong> <strong>followed by Dhaka <\/strong>(Bangladesh), <strong>Tokyo<\/strong> (Japan), and <strong>New Delhi (India)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dominance of small and medium cities:<\/strong> Around 96 per cent of the world\u2019s 12,000 cities have fewer than one million inhabitants, and 81 per cent have fewer than 2.5 lakh people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rural areas remain the most common settlement<\/strong> type in 62 countries today, down from 116 in 1975.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>By 2050<\/strong>, this number is <strong>projected to decline further to 44<\/strong> countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India specific findings<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>High town population:<\/strong> India has 44 per cent of its population living in towns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large town population globally:<\/strong> India and China together account for over 1.2 billion town dwellers, which is more than 40 per cent of the world\u2019s total town population.<\/li>\n<li>Over <strong>one-third of shrinking cities are in China<\/strong> and 17% in India<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rapid urban growth projection:<\/strong> <strong>India<\/strong> is among seven countries\u2014along with Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia\u2014that will <strong>contribute over half of the projected 986 million increase in global city dwellers by 2050<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Recently UN DESA released the new World Urbanization Prospects 2025 report using the Degree of Urbanization methodology.
