ET Auto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Bharat New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)<\/strong> <strong>2.0<\/strong> is a <strong>revised vehicle safety rating programme<\/strong> that <strong>evaluates the crashworthiness and safety technologies of cars sold in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nodal Ministry: <\/strong>Ministry of Road Transport and Highways<strong> (MoRTH)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Certification by<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Testing and certification are handled by the <strong>Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), Pune.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>Its <strong>aim<\/strong> is to <strong>upgrade India\u2019s vehicle safety standards<\/strong>, <strong>protect<\/strong> both occupants and vulnerable road users, and encourage <strong>adoption of advanced safety technologies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Features<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Comprehensive Assessment Verticals<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Bharat NCAP 2.0 evaluates every vehicle across <strong>five assessment areas <\/strong>which are &#8211;\n<ul>\n<li>Safe Driving<\/li>\n<li>Accident Avoidance<\/li>\n<li>Crash Protection<\/li>\n<li>Vulnerable Road User Protection<\/li>\n<li>Post-Crash Safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expanded Mandatory Crash Tests: <\/strong>Under the crash protection vertical, it introduces an <strong>expanded set of mandatory crash tests<\/strong>, including new <strong>full-width frontal impact<\/strong> and <strong>rear impact tests<\/strong> in addition to earlier tests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Injury Assessment Using ATDs: <\/strong>The programme uses <strong>Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs) <\/strong>to<strong> assess potential injuries<\/strong> to adult and child occupants in different crash scenarios during all required tests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus on Active Safety Technologies: <\/strong>It makes the <strong>Electronic Stability Control (ESC) <\/strong>system a<strong> mandatory technology<\/strong> for eligibility to the <strong>star rating programme<\/strong>, while allowing manufacturers to <strong>voluntarily<\/strong> offer <strong>Autonomous Emergency Braking System (AEBS)<\/strong> for additional assessment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Revised and Stricter Star Rating Criteria: <\/strong>The revised document <strong>increases the point thresholds for higher star ratings<\/strong> and introduces conditions such as <strong>minimum Adult Occupant Protection<\/strong> scores and the <strong>bar on zero scores<\/strong> in any assessment vertical for a five-star rating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Bharat NCAP 2023<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Implementation<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Bharat NCAP 2023 was implemented <strong>in October 2023.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> Its purpose is to <strong>provide safety ratings for vehicles<\/strong> based on <strong>crash testing<\/strong> under <strong>Automotive Industry Standard AIS-197<\/strong> and to give <strong>star ratings<\/strong> that reflect the <strong>crashworthiness of cars<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessment verticals and crash test procedure: <\/strong>Under Bharat NCAP 2023, vehicles are assessed under <strong>Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection and Safety Assist Technologies <\/strong>through controlled frontal, side and oblique side impact crash tests at specified speeds to evaluate safety performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nature of the Programme:<\/strong> Bharat NCAP 2023 is <strong>voluntary<\/strong> in nature.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Valid till:<\/strong> It is an <strong>India-specific safety certification programme<\/strong> valid till <strong>September 30, 2027.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a revised draft of Bharat NCAP 2.0 expanding assessment scope and updating safety standards.
