{"id":35062,"date":"2018-10-31T15:01:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35062"},"modified":"2018-10-31T15:01:00","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:31:00","slug":"finalise-body-for-cauvery-water-sharing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/finalise-body-for-cauvery-water-sharing\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Finalise body for Cauvery water sharing\u2019:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/finalise-body-for-sharing-of-river-water-tn-tells-sc\/article19717673.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Finalise body for Cauvery water sharing\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cauvery river water dispute, primarily between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, dates back to the 19th century.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Nadu government is insisting that the Supreme Court should appoint an authority and frame a scheme for sharing and management of Cauvery river waters among Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry, and not leave the responsibility to the Centre.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the argument being made?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the past 25 years, Tamil Nadu had a frictional relationship with Karnataka over Cauvery, and had often had to make the journey to the Supreme Court for release of water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Court did chide the Centre for not implementing the final award of the Cauvery Tribunal in 2007.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Responsibility of the government questioned<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme Court has questioned the reluctance shown by the Centre to set up of the Cauvery Management Board and frame a scheme for implementation of the tribunal award despite it having been notified in 2013.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre did set up the Cauvery River Water Authority and Supervisory Committee following the Supreme Court&#8217;s direction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre had decided to wait till the Supreme Court took a final call on the tribunal award.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tribunal award was not clear about water release during times of distress.
