{"id":350839,"date":"2025-11-28T16:11:58","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T10:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=350839"},"modified":"2025-11-28T16:11:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T10:41:58","slug":"scheme-to-promote-manufacturing-of-sintered-rare-earth-permanent-magnets-repm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/scheme-to-promote-manufacturing-of-sintered-rare-earth-permanent-magnets-repm\/","title":{"rendered":"Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>N<strong>ews<\/strong>: The Union Cabinet approved the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets with a financial outlay of Rs. 7,280 crore.<\/p>\n<h2>About Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_350841\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-350841\" style=\"width: 311px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-350841\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-PIB-10.jpg?resize=311%2C367&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPM)\" width=\"311\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-PIB-10.jpg?resize=254%2C300&amp;ssl=1 254w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Source-PIB-10.jpg?w=737&amp;ssl=1 737w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-350841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>first-of-its-kind national initiative<\/strong> to build a <strong>complete domestic supply chain<\/strong> from <strong><strong>rare earth oxides to finished high-performance Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPMs).<\/strong><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It will support setting up <strong>integrated REPM manufacturing units<\/strong> that convert <strong>rare earth oxides into metals, then metals into alloys, and finally alloys into finished magnets.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>N<\/strong><strong>odal ministry<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>The nodal ministry is the <strong>Ministry of Mines (<\/strong>with oversight from the <strong>Department of Atomic Energy and NITI Aayog<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Targets<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Establish 6,000 Metric Tons per Annum (MTPA)<\/strong> integrated REPM <strong>manufacturing<\/strong> capacity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select 5<\/strong><strong> beneficiaries<\/strong> through <strong>global competitive<\/strong> bidding, each with up to <strong>1,200 MTPA capacity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial outlay<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Total outlay: <strong>Rs. 7,280 crore<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Rs. 6,450 crore as <strong>sales-linked incentives for five years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Rs. 750 crore as <strong>capital subsidy<\/strong> for setting up 6,000 MTPA capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>D<\/strong><strong>uration<\/strong>: The total duration of the scheme will be <strong>7 years<\/strong> from the date of award which include-\n<ul>\n<li>a <strong>2-year gestation period<\/strong> for setting up an <strong>integrated REPM manufacturing facility<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>5 years<\/strong> for <strong>incentive disbursement<\/strong> on the <strong>sale<\/strong> of REPM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Current Status of India w.r.t. Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPMs)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rare earth reserves in India: <\/strong>India <strong>has 6.9 million tonnes of rare earth reserves<\/strong>, (<strong>5th largest globally<\/strong>), yet contributes <strong>around 1% <\/strong>to global production.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distribution: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It spread across <strong>coastal placer sands<\/strong> in <strong>Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also found in <strong>hard-rock deposits <\/strong>in R<strong>ajasthan and Gujarat.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>REPMs consumption in India: India currently consumes about 4,000\u20135,000 tons per annum (TPA)<\/strong> of permanent magnets.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Future demand:<\/strong> REPM demand is <strong>expected to double by 2030<\/strong> from <strong>2025<\/strong> due to <strong>electric vehicles, renewable energy, and electronics.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Import dependent:<\/strong> Presently, REPM demand is <strong>almost fully import-dependent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> For more information on <strong>Rare Earth Permanent Magnets (REPMs), <\/strong>please click\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/rare-earth-magnets\/\"> here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Union Cabinet approved the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets with a financial outlay of Rs. 7,280 crore.
