{"id":35105,"date":"2018-10-31T15:16:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=35105"},"modified":"2018-10-31T15:16:24","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T09:46:24","slug":"the-mysterious-windy-venus-is-revealed-for-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-mysterious-windy-venus-is-revealed-for-the-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"The mysterious \u00a0windy Venus is revealed for the first time:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.in\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj2tuuI7a3WAhXBqY8KHWRrDqwQFgglMAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thehindu.com%2Fsci-tech%2Fscience%2Fmysterious-night-side-of-venus-revealed-for-first-time%2Farticle19703641.ece&amp;usg=AFQjCNFlLEhye1YoLALg7C31RoNGpOBLZg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mysterious \u00a0windy Venus is revealed for the first time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time, the night side of the Venus has been observed and how the atmosphere circulates on the night side of Venus on a global scale<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are the characteristics of the night side of Venus?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is wind and cloud patterns in the night side of planet Venus and behaves very differently from the part facing the Sun.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The night side exhibits unexpected and previously-unseen cloud types, morphologies, and dynamics \u2014 some of which appear to be connected to features on the planet\u2019s surface<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venus\u2019 atmosphere is dominated by strong winds that whirl around the planet far faster than Venus itself rotates.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is super-rotation?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong winds whirl around Venus which are faster than Venus&#8217;s own rotation speed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phenomenon, known as \u2018super-rotation\u2019, sees Venusian winds rotating up to 60 times faster than the planet below, pushing and dragging along clouds within the atmosphere as they go.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These clouds travel fastest at the upper cloud level, some 65 to 72 kilometres above the surface.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why so much significance to night side of the planet ?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus has primarily on night side because it has remained poorly explored.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The upper clouds on the planet&#8217;s night side has been seen by thermal emission, but it has been difficult to observe them because enough detail could not be picked up.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What technique has been used to study the night side of the planet?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) on European Space Agency (ESA)\u2019s Venus Express spacecraft was used to observe the clouds in the infrared.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than capturing single images, VIRTIS gathered a \u2019cube\u2019 of hundreds of images of Venus acquired simultaneously at different wavelengths.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allowed the team to combine numerous images to improve the visibility of the clouds, and see them at unprecedented quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The VIRTIS images thus reveal phenomena on Venus\u2019 night side that have never before been seen on the dayside.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mysterious \u00a0windy Venus is revealed for the first time: Context For the first time, the night side of the Venus has been observed and how the atmosphere circulates on the night side of Venus on a global scale What are the characteristics of the night side of Venus?
